Slave happiness does not factor in, as they are the exception with 100% output regardless of happiness:

Unrest is not a problem also for slaves as their political weight is minimal compared to other pops like nobles or citizens. See this post: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/political-weight-has-been-changed.1461265/

The best shot you have for your economy is to increase national taxes with inventions and maybe harsh taxation if you are fine with your research efficiency.

With slaves the best thing is to stop their promotion in enclaves with high trade value goods and build buildings to increase their production: mines and slave states in settlements and forges and mills in cities.

Tax is the most reliable and baseline income you can have, trade and tribute are complementary to tax income. Slave cities are best placed on terrain that allows for larger populations and have valuable trade goods that you will need many slaves to create surplus of. Whereas poor terrain provinces with valuable goods are better with mines/farming settlements because they lack the ability to support enough pops to generate a decent surplus. Most other territories deserve barracks and regular cities. You'll find that boosting tyranny and expanding is adequate to increase your tax income massively. There are several laws and techs to boost tax but increasing civ level and happiness also helps because other pops pay tax as well just in smaller amounts. Its personal preference whether slave or freemen pop economies are better so go with your gut.

Commerce is very powerful and you can earn more money from commerce than taxes.

To obtain the best return for commerce, the player has to maximize exports as they have a x1 of trade value. Imports or national trade are not that important (0.35 and 0,20 respectively) for income.

To ensure that you have enough goods to export, the player has to invest in mines and slaves estates in settlements and forges and mills in cities with the best trade goods.

To guarantee that you have enough buyers for your goods, the best thing is to be centered in the map to have enough trade partners. If this is not possible or you do not have enough of them, vassals and league cities are your friends.

I never thought the trade range problem could be so bad until I did an rednaxelA game as Chola->Dravida->Bharatvarsha and left my capital down in south India. It did however teach me that taking the tax value and slave output inventions can be quite powerful as a very large tag.

Looks like the Byzaboos were right all along, Byzantium really is the city of the world's desire. Or at least the centrally-located-city-on-the-map-for-trade-purposes of world's desire.

The entire Middle East and Anatolia are good. North Egypt is nice as well.
