In my opinion,you can't compare 1914 with other mods.

1914 is a very large mod.I,for me,enjoy it,and I consider this mod one of the best ever created for HOI2/DD

MDS2 is also a fantastic mod,very comprehensive,and with lot of action.

None of these two are finished.

For the realistic ones,well,Total Realism Project is my favourite.Just give it a try.

You could also try Mod33.
The english translation is really bad. It has been made automatically with the google translator
Nevertheless we are trying to improve it.
About the mod, it is a what if mod, a large part is dedicated to true history but so much possibilities. Finally Mod33 gives player the possiblity to play each time a diferent game with an uncertain backstage and context.
Right now it is 8000+ events, new improve IA, specific graphics, sounds, musics, units and so more.

TRP ofcourse, more downloads than any other mod!

Highlights

-Better combat system that is more realistic
-Better air combat system that is more realistic (Can't destroy divisions but air power is a major requirement if you want to push your enemy and can turn battles)
-Better Naval system that shortens battles and increases damage (also more realistic)

Also best AI all around IMO, the AI has no cheats and has the same abilities as a human player. It has been built on the Vanilla AI scripts (which I wrote) and enhanced further such as abilities to build nukes etc....
