Screech Oligarchy

The Screech have evolved on Rakhi, a low-gravity world of desert dunes interspersed with tall mountain ranges and lush forests, the latter forming the cradle of their civilisation. Vast distances made warfare rare. Each forest developed as an insulated community engaging with others via trade and occasional raiding.

All changed when technological progress brought the ability to tap into vast underground water reservoirs. New settlements, nourished by aquifers, disrupted the balance of power. Several worldwide wars drove the Screech nation-states to air and space at cost of much destruction and resource exhaustion. Modern Screech know well the scars left by war, and accept them as inevitable cost of progress.

Once Screech began colonising other worlds, their old habits resurfaced. Each settlement on each colony is a fiercely independent and self-sustaining unit, banding with others for mutual protection only, and ruthlessly seeking its own benefit at other times – an approach that makes other species distrust and avoid them.

The Screech society is intensely materialistic. Any spiritual matters are out of favour with the hungry young generation aiming for the stars. Their only mantra is that he who dies with the most toys, wins.

For ages, the Vissari have gazed towards the stars, knowing that the Great Makers looked down upon them from above. With the discovery of FTL travel, the Kingdom now have the means to find their Makers. Any life out there is to be revered as a creation of the Makers, but everything that stands in the way of finding the divine will be crushed.

The Karabin are a highly intelligent race who evolved beneath the thick layer of ice which, until recently, blanketed their ocean world. After unifying their various undersea nation-states and sending their first probes above the ice, glimpsing the stars above, a grand engineering project was undertaken to melt the ice and bring the first pressurized Karabin colonies to the surface. Now, the Combined Karabin Colonies have set their sights on solving mysteries even further out of reach.

The harsh world of Xolk'eer bred a tough race of arthropods, intelligent beings who had to construct their homes to withstand the withering dust storms and tornado winds of their turbulent home. Having discovered art while waiting for a storm to pass, the planet's largest hive overthrew their own queen and formed a society that prized aesthetics above all.
When they discovered space travel, they found a galaxy filled with creatures that utterly repulsed them. Beings who created works of architecture that were disgustingly tacky. The Xolk joined together, lead by their impossibly talented Maestra Uv-Ko, to purge the stars in the name of good taste.

Shisik Dominion
Dabba Naxan was a cruel mother to the Shisk. Summers that could cook their flesh and winters that destroyed all plant life. For millennium the Shisik weathered the wrath of their planet until eventually they found the means to stand against the elements. Being born in such an unforgiving world the shisik know the value of sacrifice for the greater good. villages that could not sustain would give their most gifted to a another and willingly venture out into the desert knowing they have made a worthy sacrifice. Slaves from other villages are common and work for their new masters willingly to prove their worth. Now that the shisik are among the stars however their faith in unity is being tested. The purges that normally went unnoticed have now brought about suspicion and fear from races who do not know the worth of sacrifice. Where the shisik see heroes the ignorant savages of the galaxy see victims. Now dedicated to the purpose of unity the Shisik seek to change the minds of the races through summer or winter (diplomacy or war) whatever the cost.

Due to the long lives these people lead, they have always had a longer view than those around them. They have waited patiently as the planet came under one government. They waited as technology opened up the universe to them. And now, these Old Ones wait no longer. Ancient and Powerful, they will have what is yours.
