View attachment 343819 I am playing with 1.5 patch as Japan but without the Waking the Tiger DLC. I found out there is a new combat modifier called 'Commitment to the War' which decreases my divisions' soft and hard attack on offense by a whopping 50%. Any idea how to get rid of it?

I have 90% war support and 70% stability btw.

Based on this quote from the Japan rework dev diary it's to simulate Japan not taking the war "seriously", thinking that it'll be a walk in the park.
Simulating the war in China itself has come with its own challenges. We wanted to make the war feel like the long campaign it was (lasting, historically, from 1937 to 1945), not least because a Japan with a secure China can bring far more resources to bear on other targets than it did historically. At the same time, China starts with crippling penalties to its army, which means that Japan could easily defeat them. This is not particularly historical, as the Japanese expected a quick victory and were rudely surprised as the Chinese divisions fought very tenaciously.

So in order to make the campaign in China feel historical and give the Chinese player a chance to survive the initial invasion, we gave Japan some penalties for fighting in China (or, specifically, when fighting against Chinese troops). These penalties can be reduced through decisions, which raise world tension, so you will have to balance out the need to finish the campaign fast against raising world tension too quickly. We feel that this best represents the disdain the Japanese military held their opponents in - the Chinese simply weren’t worth a proper effort. Of course you, as the player, can hound your military into actually taking this conflict seriously, but the rest of the world may not like the idea of all-out warfare in China.
To that end, there should be some decisions you can take to reduce that modifier.

There should be decision called Escalation of War in China. It will lower the penalty by 10%/5% IIRC (penalty to defense is smaller)

I was waiting for someone to post this.

The patch has introduced the new nerfs to Japan via their new brand new tree, but not to China (if you don't have the DLC), which keeps the default tree and has NONE of the nerfs!

Its a straight weakening of Japan, to the extent that its unplayable and will now always be beaten by China when AI vs AI.

Did Paradox even playtest 1.5.0 without the DLC?

So OP, your only solution is to buy the DLC so that China is at least as weakened as you.

They should have just kept the old tree for Japan for those without the DLC.

Yeah I nodest it soon after I posted here. Japan tends to win in my other playthroughs but with huge losses, so much that they lose momentum (maybe its historical idk). Its kinda annoying nerfing Japan so outrightly, now it is VERY difficult for Japan to take over the world since you cant even beat China in 4 years.

However Japan seems buffed at sea so maybe can find its niche at multiplayer.

? From my LP - I've forced Japan to surrender on 12th March of 1938. Start of the war IIRC was more or less on somewhat historical date. (Mid 1937).

I definetely wouldn't agree with the 'can't beat China in 4 years.'
