The three Commerce policies are as following with values taken from the first Egypt stream:
  • Transaction Taxation: +15% Commerce Income Modifier & +2 Slaves Needed for Surplus Trade Good Production
  • Trading Permits: No Modifiers.
  • Free Trade: -15% Commerce Income & +1 Trade Route Per Province
The values are not important other than for balance. The real issues I can see is the +2 slaves needed for transaction taxation and +1 trade route per province from free trade.

If you switch to transaction taxation, it is possible that you lose copies of goods and that could mess up your trade routes alot which mean you lose huge amount of Power and Commerce income. Free trade have the opposite issue that if you use the extra trade routes and then switch away from it you going to lose several trade routes and thus the Power you invested into these.

It seems to me that Commerce policy will be something you set at start and then forget about it because of all issues than can be caused then switching it.

Yea, having to make strategic choices in grand strategy games can be really annoying.
But no other choice in the game seems to break stuff in your country. Like should you have to go through to see if switching to Transaction Taxation will break your surplus iron in your capital or break your foreign exports. Compare to the tax policy which have bonuses and maluses which don't break anything such as more slave output for less research.

Nah, if someone wants a discussion on radically different parts of the game it's best to make new threads. That way we can have a focused conversation on just the topic at hand, instead of merging everything together into a megathread. Megathreads are always terrible.

I think some of Denkt's ideas are great while others are terrible. It's nice to be able to separate them.
