I started a new game (first time playing, tried Texas a couple times just to get a feel for a small place... disaster. Then Switzerland...not so bad..)

ANYWAY, I got a couple events - one was about whether to have good leadership or good crews on my boats, and another one that I can't remember. Anyway, it said that the outcome would show up if I "hovered" (or perhaps it was right click?) over the choice (like a typical little message box does), but when I do that, the little box is really little (like 1 cm x 1 cm) and empty.

I just installed Victoria 1, then 1.04 Patch, and then Victoria Revolutions one after another as it said to do on the board. (Got Vic1 and VicRev from GamersGate today, and 1.04 from Paradox).

Are these WAD when they are empty like this or am I missing something?

BTW - I am getting a good feeling about this game already. This is definitely going to consume mass quantities of my time........

By the way, the general recommendations are Clausewitzian Theory and Superior Crew Thesis. Admittedly Jominian theory has its defenders, especially in the early game, but I don't think I've ever heard a single good word spoken on Naval Hero.

Originally, one of these theories was randomly assigned to the player. You would simply get a pop-up message informing you that your nation's military had chosen to go with either Clausewitz's theory or Jomini's theory governing combat, and then you would get another informing you of the Navy's choice.

In game terms, Clausewitzian theory will grant your units great increases of organization over time, while Jominian theory will give your units a big jump in morale. In the navy, the Hero Thesis corresponds to the Jominian theory for land combat, while the Superior Crew is like the Clausewitzian theory.

Players did not like being "assigned" their military theory. First, a player-created mod was made available called the Military Determinism Mod, which was then incorporated in a later patch of the game, either 1.04 or Revolutions I just don't remember which. If forced to guess, I would guess it was made official in the 1.04 version.

Corbett is correct in stating the "common wisdom" surrounding this choice. If a player is planning on early expansion wars, then they have typically been told to choose Jominian and Naval Hero (possibly); but otherwise Clausewitzian and Superior Crew is recommended.

Personally, for what it is worth, I almost always pick Clausewitzian and Superior Crew. I expect that an early war would present itself as rather a challenge, but I usually try to avoid early wars at all costs. What players choose for playing a World Conquest game is beyond me. You'll have to ask one of the WC'ers. :)

The lack of a pop-up explaining your choices is due to a limitation in the game scripting, IIRC. The script in the Military Determinism Mod appears to show some explanation in the buttons themselves, so evidently the script was not simply cut and pasted into the official version, or there was some problem attempting to incorporate the mod into official version.

[Looks at army_inventions.txt]

The MDM was not directly incorporated into the official update. I may have to play and see if the MDM does better about displaying choices and if it will work with some minor alteration of the army_inventions.txt file. If I get the time, I'll try it and let you know. ;)

In later years of the game, units have so much morale and firepower, that they will get destroyed completely, before losing all morale and retreating. That's because fire attack increases greatly during the game, but shock stays practicaly the same.

I played a bit last night with modifying the army_inventions.txt file and made changes so that the scripts for choosing Clausewitzian versus Jominian were more like the Military Determinism Mod instead of the current scripts. Preliminary tests looked good to me. I did have one crash to desktop, but I think it was just a random one because I restarted from an autosave and everything went fine. I did not check to insure that changes were actually made to the unit stats after the event fired, however, so I have more testing to perform as I have time.

I did not test the naval side of things.

I would have done more, but I kept falling asleep sitting up. One of the hazards of getting older. :eek:o

The MDM does display text inside the choice buttons indicating just what the choices do.

In my slow, Southern way, I will eventually post the modified file for you guys to use, if you like. I'm definitely going to offer it for VIP, if those guys like it.
