I am playing a game as Austria (1.08 + latest beta, no mods) AOE scenario. This is my first game trying to define goals for myself other than conquest or VPs. My goals:

(1) Support the growth of Catholicism in Europe.
(2) No wars of aggression against Catholic powers.
(3) Growth through vasalization and diploannexation (or just remain allied).
(4) Seek conversions to Catholicism in conflict with other powers.
(5) Aggressively halt and rollback the advance of Islam into Europe.
(6) Ignore naval and colonization possibilities.
(7) Save and reload at every decade boundary.

The year is 1616. Europe has been fairly peaceful for decades as conflict between the great powers Spain, France, Austria, Poland, and the Ottoman Empire has been avoided. Austria knows that she will ultimately need to confront the advance of Islam from the South, but she is not yet ready to mobolize her economy and military.

However, the Ottoman Empire is shaken by Civil War. Bosnia, almost at Austria's door step declares its independent and a fellow member of the One True Faith. Austria is already in an alliance led by Poland, but Austria cannot sit ideally by while Bosnian independence is crushed and Catholicism is purged. What is Austria to do?

---

Back to EU2 ... I cannot ally myself with Bosnia. Ideally, I would want to lead an alliance with Bosnia a member and force the Ottoman Empire to the peace table liberating provinces to Austria's South (Moldova, Wallachia, Serbia) and forcing the Ottoman Empire to recognize Bosnia's destiny as independent nation. All I could see to do is:

(1) Declare war on the Ottoman Empire. This will allow me to keep the Ottoman Empire occuppied while Bosnia struggles to recruit an army. Additionally, the Ottoman Empire be so weakened that it no longer is able to threaten Bosnia. If I am succussful in the conflict, I will be able to extend Austria's southern border and thus, be able to establish a common border with Bosnia. Hopefully, when peace reasserts itself, I can form a true alliance with Bosnia and protect from future Ottoman aggression.

(2) Ask for Bosnia for Military Access, thus allowing my troops engage Ottoman troops which may enter their province.

(3) Proposed a royal marriage, since if I am going to save Bosnia, then we might as well be bound together.

Was there anything else in the game mechanics of EU2 which I could have done?

---

I am not sure how things will turn out. Poland initially failed to join me in the war, but decided to come in later. It's late 1618 and I did push the OT further south. It appeared that the fight was knocked out of them. France also declared war and their troops began coming in from the East. In the mean time, I was facing major uprisings in Bohemia. So, I signed a peace deal with the Ottoman Empire so that I could free up my army. Bosnia is still at war, but now has an army and is on the offensive against the rag tag remains of the Ottoman Army.

Thanks.

One obvious item you didn't mention: send Bosnia gifts. Along with your help keeping the OE out of Bosnia using MA this makes sure they can afford to buy all the troops their manpower can support and may let them buy peace.

If you are the only one in the alliance with Poland, you could withdraw, and then re-invite them, and Bosnia. If your relations are high enough, they should re-join.

An option you didn't have to consider was to declare yourself defender of the faith (you already had a CB against OE because they held one of your cores). But as it appears your self imposed goals are what being the DOF should consist of, this would have been a viable option to get a CB against OE even had they not held your cores. But I'm sure this was obvious to all.

That's a pretty good idea cuz then you would really be able to protect the Catholic world since you get a CB on any non-Catholic who DOWs a Catholic

Okay, so suppose I am DOF. That gives me a reason for going to war, but even if I win the war it doesn't compel the target of my military action to cease and desist attacks against Catholic countries as result of our peace negotiations. I find that somewhat unsatisfying. I suppose guaranteeing another country's independence also suffers from the same incomplete semantics in peace negotiations.

Additionally, these semantics somewhat cheapen the lofty and altruistic connotation of DOF. Instead of being the great protector of the community of nations belonging to the true church, you are a manipulator merely seeking an excuse to further your own goals. :(

I do like the idea of giving cash directly the victim of aggression, it is a much more genuine act. :)

But beware, a common outcome of giving cash to the weak party in a war is that it ends in the hands of the strong party in the peace deal. Very unsatisfying.

D of the F wouldn't actually help Bosnia, because when they declare independence, they declare war on the Ottoman Empire rather than the other way round. My strategy might have been to wait for the Turks to reconquer Bosnia, and that will give you a CB on them for annexing a Catholic country - you then declare war and liberate Bosnia, either keeping it or releasing it as a vassal.

You make that sound so negative.

Guarantee the independence of Bosnia. Works as well as DOF. And it's cheaper.

This is an excellent set of goals!

I'm feeling like playing singleplayer for the first time in years! :D

Thanks! :D

Well, one thing you should know before trying these goals ... it's around 1680 now ... except for booting the OT out of Southern Europe, I have had to do very little to achieve my goal. With the exception of some encroachment by Sweden in the North, Europe is entirely Catholic (official state religions).

Also, I was surprised to find that despite not playing for expansion and not being large relative to Spain, France, and Poland (huge); Austria is the richest country on the planet with the world's best ground forces. Despite pouring tons of cash into conversions, all this, simply by managing my economy and trading well.

Maybe I needed a better set of goals. :(
