I am playing a game as Austria (1.08 + latest beta, no mods) AOE scenario. This is my first game trying to define goals for myself other than conquest or VPs. My goals:
(1) Support the growth of Catholicism in Europe.
(2) No wars of aggression against Catholic powers.
(3) Growth through vasalization and diploannexation (or just remain allied).
(4) Seek conversions to Catholicism in conflict with other powers.
(5) Aggressively halt and rollback the advance of Islam into Europe.
(6) Ignore naval and colonization possibilities.
(7) Save and reload at every decade boundary.
The year is 1616. Europe has been fairly peaceful for decades as conflict between the great powers Spain, France, Austria, Poland, and the Ottoman Empire has been avoided. Austria knows that she will ultimately need to confront the advance of Islam from the South, but she is not yet ready to mobolize her economy and military.
However, the Ottoman Empire is shaken by Civil War. Bosnia, almost at Austria's door step declares its independent and a fellow member of the One True Faith. Austria is already in an alliance led by Poland, but Austria cannot sit ideally by while Bosnian independence is crushed and Catholicism is purged. What is Austria to do?

Back to EU2 ... I cannot ally myself with Bosnia. Ideally, I would want to lead an alliance with Bosnia a member and force the Ottoman Empire to the peace table liberating provinces to Austria's South (Moldova, Wallachia, Serbia) and forcing the Ottoman Empire to recognize Bosnia's destiny as independent nation. All I could see to do is:
(1) Declare war on the Ottoman Empire. This will allow me to keep the Ottoman Empire occuppied while Bosnia struggles to recruit an army. Additionally, the Ottoman Empire be so weakened that it no longer is able to threaten Bosnia. If I am succussful in the conflict, I will be able to extend Austria's southern border and thus, be able to establish a common border with Bosnia. Hopefully, when peace reasserts itself, I can form a true alliance with Bosnia and protect from future Ottoman aggression.
(2) Ask for Bosnia for Military Access, thus allowing my troops engage Ottoman troops which may enter their province.
(3) Proposed a royal marriage, since if I am going to save Bosnia, then we might as well be bound together.
Was there anything else in the game mechanics of EU2 which I could have done?

I am not sure how things will turn out. Poland initially failed to join me in the war, but decided to come in later. It's late 1618 and I did push the OT further south. It appeared that the fight was knocked out of them. France also declared war and their troops began coming in from the East. In the mean time, I was facing major uprisings in Bohemia. So, I signed a peace deal with the Ottoman Empire so that I could free up my army. Bosnia is still at war, but now has an army and is on the offensive against the rag tag remains of the Ottoman Army.
Thanks.
