Does anyone actually use the tributary CB? I find it's almost never worthwhile - the cost of the war in the first place isn't offset by the reward. If the target is small enough to be beaten easily, it's not worth the reward. I think the only time I've used it was as a tribal surrounded by other tribals to raise cash for a kingdom title, when it was the only CB available.

Why tributary when you can conquer?

I never even tried it... If I can beat someone, I will as well take his territories to convert it to my religion or to my dynasty, even if I let it free after.

A few days ago, I actually saw the AI, in a "Rivalry war", I didn't even know it existed.

Rivalry war can sometimes have value because you imprison the target on victory - say for example you are related to the target and/or are in the line of succession.

I agree that even though the patch is the problem, I have absolutely 0 interest in Conclave's features. For me they are the opposite of an improvement. I don't complain about it since it's optional, so I don't buy it and that's it, but I think it's the worse DLC ever.

worst-episode-ever.jpg

I'm joking of course ;)

In all seriousness I think Conclave takes the game in a particular direction away from both the free for all sandbox style of play and the world conquest/map-painting style of play. It is more prescriptive in the way you need to play the game in order to get the most out of it. If you like min/maxing the game to take over the world as quickly as possible you'll be frustrated by the infamy/threat mechanic. If you are a big RP player there are lots of childhood education events that seem to have disappeared and the game as a whole feels a little more 'linear' - in previous versions the human player has been in such a strong position that they can manipulate the game to make the stories that they want whereas under the current version you are under more pressure to play the game as designed by the developers. IMHO it is a more satisfying gaming experience but if your enjoyment of the game comes from it being a 'story generator' you are now a little bit more straight jacketed in being able to influence how the story develops.

BEFORE buying Conclave, he should play the game without it. Because if he hates coalitions and shattered retreats, he'll go back to 2.4.5 and Conclave will be useless.

Coalitions and shattered retreats are, IMHO, not the real problem. The real problem is that council politics and the whole favor system are just really annoying to deal with. Just having the whole realm vote on laws both made more sense and was a lot more streamlined.

The only problem with conclave is not having a choice in joining your allies wars. I absolutely love conclave because it's now a decent challenge to hold together a realm.

Before conclave, I would go through 3 or 4 generations without seeing a faction or plot pop up against me and after 10 years no-one has a lower opinion than 70 of me. It's great when you have a exceptionally powerful and stable realm but after 300 years of nobody challenging your rule from in or outside of your country it gets a bit bland.

My only real problem with conclave is that you can call in council support in exchange for a favor, rather than needing the favor in the first place. Which means that my 4 pragmatist and glory hound khan vassals all go "sure, malcontent unlanded court chaplain, I will support you for the next 36 months. I'm sure that favour you then owe me will come in handy, what with your lack of land, troops or family." And then I get stuff like "You have too much land!" "Yeah, I guess I do. I'll give you guys some of it" "No, we're malcontents and MUST oppose you giving away land!"

ETA: There's an Obama/Congress joke in there somewhere, but I guess I should probably avoid making it...

Agreed 100%.

I'm probably in a tiny minority here, but I play the game with ALL the DLCs except Sunset Invasion and now, without Conclave.

Oddly, for *me* the game is now better than ever; because with a fully updated patch but minus Conclave, realm management is slightly harder (due to the opinion nerfs), and there is added difficulty to rapid expansion (due to coalitions and shattered retreat) but I don't have the added annoyance of micromanaging the council. So the game has now hit a very good "sweet-spot" for my style of play and micro-management tolerance.

But, to each his own....

PS: Once they address the "auto call to arms" issue, I may be in CK2 nirvana.

So what goes when you disable the DLC? I don't really mind the new education system/council mechanics, enjoy SR and coalitions but really don't like the new CTAs and especially the loss of crown authority.

If I disabled the DLC would I keep SR/coalitions and get crown authority back? That would sorely tempt me to sacrifice the council/education mechanics. What else would I lose?

TBH, I wouldn't really care about the council mechanics as much if councillers weren't allowed to use favors to call for votes on stuff. Which results in you passing the same law back and forth for decades. Plus the 5 year wait time between laws, even if they're really minor things.

Add to that the problem that managing the council isn't actually very difficult - just buy favors or request support in the council and you can pass whatever you want. In that regard, I'd say it's actually made passing laws easier since you no longer have to (much more realistically, IMO) try to force the law through for years at a time. Plus the fact that while the councillers allegedly fall into subgroups that indicate how they vote, their actual voting seems pretty random - why the hell are loyalists voting against me at all?

Remember that the OP asked which DLC to get not why the latest DLC sucks balls. Aren't there other topics out there that address the sucking balls issue still on the front page?

This has been an illuminating thread for me since I happen to be in pretty much the same position as the OP having just came back to the game after an extended absence, although the DLCs that I've missed also include the Sons Of Abraham, is that worth getting?

Also several people here have referred to seduction as being a controversial mechanic in WOL, could anyone elaborate on why this is the case?
