Re: PC Gamer 57%???

I think the game probably (and correctly) took some hits with them for the crappy manual and stability issues. Most likely they mostly ignored the game because it did not some from ( in their eyes) a major Publisher...but it was a generally positive review.

That might have been the US version of PC gamer.

But even the dreaded "Game Spot" didn't manage to give EU that low a score! Game Spot pretty much believe that Halflife is the best game that's ever been produced and that Age of Kings is the pinnacle of strategy gaming but even they recognized that EU had something about it (they weren't sure what but they still realized). So is PC Gamers staff made up of people too stupid for even Game Spot to employ. Now that is scary.

Kind of a funny story about EU and PC games magazines. My cousin was flipping through a Finnish games magazine then he saw an article on EU. He thought the game was too good to be true and dismissed it as an April fools joke (it was the April edition), but he was amazed at how much effort they had put into the joke. Only after he saw an article on EU in another magazine he realised it wasn't a joke.

Well, I mean, gamespot.com gave it a high score, and that's what got me interested in the game in the first place. Gamespot is one of the, if not the biggest online game review sites, so, before we go blasting mainstream media, I'd just like to say that without it I wouldn't have known, or would have known very late. ;)

Actually, it was magazines like PC Gamer and Computer Gaming World that made me wanto buy Europa Universalis! They had full-age ads that were very impressive. They really didn't even need to explain the game that much. The title alone, in its majestic might, was enough to make me look the game up on the website. :)

US PC Gamer reviewed EU?

I never saw that, and I have a subscription! And here I was, about to write them a strongly-worded letter...:D Still, 80% is kinda low, considering the 80-90% range is supposed to go, at least partly, to games that are excellent, but have limited mass-appeal...

recommended by amazon

Pure luck. I buy games at amazon (UK), and because I had bought SimCity there, they recommended EU. Normally I wouldn't have bought it (I don't like wargames, and I thought it was a wargame), but there wasn't anything else. So I thought, lets try it. Also because I like games, from which you can learn things, like geography, history, etc. I also looked at the forum (I always do that). Probably that was the thing that impressed me the most.

P.S. I sometimes think that Paradox deliberately made a unsufficient manual (although very readable). That would encourage people to visit their webside. Maybe a new marketing strategy :D

I heard about EU from a friend who called it nearly unknown :D .
Maybe I am stupid but I do believe good quality will speak for it self in the end,
specially in the webage.
This time around they will not need much advertising :D and no sleazy pictures
thank you!!

We had been hoping for Matrix game to finish their PC version of Empires in Arms. When that project folded, we decided to give EU a try...

I didn't know there was a project to make EiA for PC. Well, I think now is too late. :)

Bought EU 'cuz of Gamespot review....

I don't remember the particulars of the review, but FYI, the Gamespot review of the game was positive enough (somewhere in the 8s on a scale of 1-10) that I bought it based upon that review and no other information!

I seem to recall them being a little upset about:
1. The inaccessibility of the manual (it just really isn't the best manual, guys! If not for this site, I wouldn't know 1/2 the important things about the game that I do. :D )
2. Instability of the game on certain systems (runs like a rock on mine, so I can't comment)
3. The steep learning curve

IMHO, the learning curve is a *wee* bit steep, but only until giddy excitement takes over. I think that in my very first game (as Turkey), I lost a war against Persia and Hungary right off the bat (first 30 mins. or so.) , and then re-started, having gained a much clearer understanding of the mechanisms and strategy involved in the game... haven't looked back!

I have hardly ever seen any commercials for PC games. The only one I saw in the lsat year was Diablo II. I highly doubt Paradox has the budget for that. Remember TV costs millions.
