First of all, thanks for a great game.

Second, Sorry if my writing is not understandable, but my english is not perfect :c.

Third, the purpose of my thread ... the combat system.

In my first games I don't take into account, I just used more number of troops to attack (there are many things to be worried in the beginning, it took me about a week to understand the basic mechanics) ... what I like about this system is that it only requires thinking, not micromanage unlike other games, where the ability to coordinate the troops is important, so I think it's ridiculous when I read people requesting for a total war style battle (another game that I love <3) in that sense I am happy because this game innovates in many areas, at least for me.

However there are things that really frustrate me, by example I've seen my army crashing in a reckless charge and therefore I know the importance of having leaders with good traits but the actual combat events give too arbitrary traits … a character can become coward even though his flank has not fled, or may become leader of infantry when only led an retinue of heavy cavalry … even in a battle of 1000 vs 10 men I'm afraid that one of my generals become craven, without counting events as dead, incapacitated, maimed, etc … that it is more understandable .

He is Georgios Piast, an smart boy from Poland who was brought to my court with 0 years old, trained by Zenobios He became a good man ... however, in his first battle with rebels (of course, he crushed those evil farmers) he turned coward ... in his second battle was maimed ... currently he is happily married, away somewhere in Africa ... He is no longer useful, even to become a guardian.

In my attempts to make good generals I have tried several things

Marry them with a woman of good heart and good fertility and have hope that their descendants will be as good as them, but this option seems to be invalid ... in my court, the only one who copulates with great success is my character ... and that's another problem, I think this is due to a form of the game to avoid filling the court ... however since the incorporation of the patch the game itself creates useless characters that fill my court.

ck213.png

ck214.png

I usually get rid of all the useless characters, but now they keep coming, so I just ignore them.

On my second try, all good generals received land so they could start a new life. The problem with this is that in less than six years most of the characters were killed or maimed with hunting events, the rest had acquired bad traits as slothful, craven, etc. Also another disadvantage is that in order to use them in battle they must be dukes or own counties within your duchies (assuming you are a king) ... the first option is difficult, the second only make them hate you (they will always want the duchy).

In my last attempt I concluded that it is unnecessary to get kids of my own courtiers ... so I just look for talented children and sent an invitation to his parents, such as Georgios Piast or Arnvid Knudsson, I really love this last <3.

Norwegian culture
Patient
Brave
Inspiring leader
Heavy infantry leader
(Diligent)
(Temperate)
(I think they are not useful in battle, but minimizes the chances of getting negative traits like slothful, gluttonous, etc)

In the center of the battle he crushed his rivals and was able to perform tactics as “inspired_defense_tactic” or “berserker_charge_tactic” … When he died of natural death, I take a momento of silence in his honor :c.

ck217.png

But here comes another problem, why a child whose father was a soldier, who was trained by a soldier, has a chance to become in "touched by midas" ....

Me

In this case I “re load” the game, eventually he became a good soldier.

ck24.png

With 4 tutors, 2 children per tutor ... 25% of them get bad traits ... 25% becomes "touched by midas”, “amateurish plotter", "underhanded rogue", etc ... 25% happens as Giorgios Piast ... the last 25% of good soldiers still have chances of dying from diseases, stress, depression, etc ... like Cawdaf ap Cynan or Edern ap Llywelyn

ck29.png

ck212u.png

I think that the worst case should be to achieve a "misguided warrior" … eventually he could improve over time, like Bedwyr, he has improved to become an “skilled tactician”

ck27n.png

I admit that not all is sad, the game offers the possibility of improving from generation to generation.

so far I have not "touched" the topic of my thread ... I would like to know your opinions ... I hope that my post not be an insult to your language :c

I don't think it's the combat system he's complaining about, but rather the education system...
It's true that there is no guarantee a character will have a specific education trait on the same tier of his tutor.

Regarding combat events, they're random, and you just got unlucky. I once had a time wherein I had a king who once had a martial of 18 or so and misguided warrior become a 31 martial brilliant strategist, though that was with a mod (it'd probably be around 24 or so without it, but still an improvement).
Besides, the coward-event doesn't mean his whole flank crumbled. It just represents an abstraction wherein he fled during a day in battle. Remember/Note that CK2 combat is spread out over several days (while certainly real confrontation would have several days of pre-battle skirmishing and positioning, decisive battles remembered in history take place within a day; the CK2 system is an abstraction/compromise since we can't really adopt HOI3's per-hour system)

Yes, the title right now is quite wrong

I intended to talk about the combat system and I wrote mostly about the education system, I still have a lot to say xd

I understand that, but it seems too arbitrary for me ... It would be logical that, the victories have good consequences, and defeats bad consequences

in the long run, they do. Getting defeated in battle means there a chance you are captured/killed. Wining by itself doesn't give bonuses, but being in combat has a chance to trigger different combat events written. Of course, mods add more events, but they are limited by what is written.

If the devs make a "expanded combat DLC" (ie. 100+ new event that trigger in combat), then maybe...

@emil73
with the recent patch, when the liege raises armies of his vassals, the vassals aren't automatically drafted into it (which is good, since if you play as a vassal nothing is more annoying that having your zero martial 17 year old count or duke die in battle because he joined an army levy raised by his liege while there was a much larger army sieging the place which results in him losing the battle and getting killed )

So now i often fight armys under nobody command. Nobodies command enemy armys flanks and no prisoners. In 1.06 i allways knew against whom i fight, sometimes brother against brother, and it was good. Btw it was duty of that 17 year old count or duke die in battle because he joined an army levy. And a good reason to gain independance.
