I got a lot Questions for the combat in SOTSII

1. As I understood, the option "Stand off" makes ships getting distance to enemy to fire just with their long range weapons (like missle - or more?). But when do I have to click this? Before I click on enemy to attack? or just click it and ships are getting distance. None of these 2 does really work. If my ships are in Close Combat, i press "Stand Off" but the ships dont try to get distance. If I activate "Stand Off" and attack enemy, its still not trying to get out of close combat...

2. Are there any infos bout my ships, except the half invisible rectangles around the ship. The Voice says often "Hull breach" or "Breach closed" ... but i dont know which ship got a hull breach

3. Is there a free camera? To click between ships often sucks very hard. If not, is it planed (also on galaxy map it would be very nice..)

4. wtf are Asteroid Monitors? I got into a ring of asteroids and there were little stations with great fire power... if I want i can sit inside the "trap" and let the time pass so i get out of battle without being damaged... Do I have to destroy all or are they dissapearig after 1 battle?

5. Assault Shuttles.. are they build with the Assault Shuttle Cruiser? I have them in design screen, but not in build screen.

6. Is there something planned like a "Slow Down" or "Pause" Option in battle? The battle is more arcade than tactics, though the skeletal structure is here: different sides, u can roll, u got close combat weapons and u got high distance weapons, etc. etc. ... but the combat goes so quick, u cant use them... its like: Go there... shoot like dumb, the side with more firepower wins.. yippey......
I saw there is a mod, but the game is so fast updated, I wait for 1.0 till i install it... but in my opinion there should be really done something at combat issues. Some told: SOTS2 is like Total War in Space,... but its more clickediclack, rush rush, hurry hurry and being annoyed all the time.
EVEN with Slow down or Pause function, the distances of fire are too small or/and the ships speed is too fast. You can roll your ship: No problem, in 2 seconds enemy can outmaneuver you and you got to roll again... combat with pause will be: pause (check, click, check, click), some seconds go, pause (and again..). This problem could be solved, if the speed of ships gets slower OR/AND (what i would prefer) the combat takes place on longer distances... sure there are many adjustments to make (like accuracy, or speed of fire) but it would make the battle much more easier to overview and charging enemies into close combat would be a real tactical decision: If you have for example ships with lots of drivers, it would cost u much to bring your ships into distance (cuz of enemy fire u take on the way), but then, you can rock enemy ships. Now its like: Damn, they shoot me with rockets... NO PROB BRO! In 5 seconds I hack and slash them down in close combat... Apropros Rockets: On long distances Rockets dont come from all sides ... it would be something special for close combat.. on long range they come all from one side; It would be no confusion nor chaos. I would generally like more infos bout distances... i know a driver has not as much distance as a laser or torpedo, but in battle: I dont know if I my ships are now in distance, where they only fire rockets or other weapons too. I have to click the ship, get some distance to the enemy, wait .. do they shoot now with phasers? no.. so a little bit more to fly ... stop, watch.... and without pause its a horror, with pause it will be an unpaused pause battle... It would be cool, if there could be some informations (like circles around the ships with different ranges of weapons) or the option: Hold distance to enemy, to fire with rockets and lasers, but not closer... so I could be sure my Ship is firing its best from distance and doesnt get into drivers distance (except they charge my ship and my ship isnt fast enough to hold distance or its dumb to fly away cuz my fleet gets scattered if flying away).

I really set hope into this game... I like the work and it has much potential, but this potential isnt far away to get used. But I still hope the best =)

1. Its bugged I think. Better of manually keeping your ships at range for now.

2. If you click on them you get rather cluttered information. You are right though that there needs to be more indication of which ship is damaged when you select them all.

3. This is bugged and they are working on fixing ship selection. There probably wont be a free camera.

4. In SOTS1 if you took out the guns, you could research it to gain special technologies (and it would act like a fortified defence for you). Ive never encountered one yet in SOTS2 (only masses of swarms) so I cant say how they work.

5. You probably have to click on 'cruiser' up the top left of the screen and change it to assault shuttle to build them. Then you might have to attach them in the battlerider manager (yes lots of micromanagement, they should just automatically come with the cruiser)

6. You can pause, P. You cant slow down though so you'll have to wait for the game to be become better balanced.

@DaveDash - I can confirm that Assault Shuttles do not appear in the build screen. When clicking the filter list [with just Cruisers researched] the only options for building are Cruisers and Favorite Invoices [this is with a valid Assault Shuttle Carrier design and Assault Shuttle design]. I am thinking, though cannot confirm, that Assault Shutles are built at the same time as the Assault Shuttle Carrier [like Drone Carriers and Drones].

With the asteroid monitors ive found that there are several of them in the ring of asteroids around the system, but if you go to sensor mode and you zoom out you will see a beacon pulsing on the map. That is the location of the "command monitor". It seems to be somewhat larger and stronger then the rest and on the edge oft hte asteroid belt instead of in the middle. All you have to do is kill it to win the battle. This also works with the pulse showing the location of swarm queens and morrigi relics.

As for ship info, if you click on individual ships you will see thier armor and how damaged it is if you zoom in on them and on the little circle in the bottom middle of the screen which showes what side of the ship is getting damaged. Also with dreads and cruisers they all have three sections and whatever section takes the most damage will explode, destyoying whatever guns and systems were in that section when the ship is heavily damaged. Other than that just look for the fire coming out of your ships and you can see when turrets get blown off. Over all they do need more info specifically on what ship is getting hit. The random yelling of "were taking fire" isnt very useful.

Not sure about the other stuff, I've never used assault shuttles and the buttons such as stand off dont seem to be working that I've noticed.

If my ships are in Close Combat, i press "Stand Off" but the ships dont try to get distance. If I activate "Stand Off" and attack enemy, its still not trying to get out of close combat...

Stances work with the primary weapon setting you set (the gold star next to the weapon). So if you want say the missile system to be your primary weapon for which stance is based off of, select it, then the stance. Standoff is basically telling the ship to engage at it's maximum range, not to go to a set distance from target in general. So say you have your mass drivers selected as primary and set standoff...it may well keep the ship at it's current range (or even get closer) if you want to say stand off and pummel it missile range (since mass drivers max range is still close range for missiles). For reference:

Standoff - maximum weapon range
Pursuit - "chase" at medium range
Close - "chase and/or circle" at close range

2. Are there any infos bout my ships, except the half invisible rectangles around the ship. The Voice says often "Hull breach" or "Breach closed" ... but i dont know which ship got a hull breach

You can band select ships during 'real time' and see all the crits as they happen, but your right it's hard to pick out which one got the crit that way. You can pause the battle at any time with the "P" command. Then cycle through your ships to view them up close to see the damage or read their crit profile. Also you can slow the combat down with Ctrl-Page down (the opposite is true as well...ctrl - Page up will speed battle up). There is no indicator at the moment of what the speed setting is, it will be added next patch or so. This should get a little better during the UI polish phase (this or next patch)

3. Is there a free camera? To click between ships often sucks very hard. If not, is it planed (also on galaxy map it would be very nice..)

During UI polish phase coming tomorrow or next patch should address this issue.

4. wtf are Asteroid Monitors? I got into a ring of asteroids and there were little stations with great fire power... if I want i can sit inside the "trap" and let the time pass so i get out of battle without being damaged... Do I have to destroy all or are they dissapearig after 1 battle?

Asteriod Monitors are a hazzard or menace (not a grand menace). There is a master or controlling Asteriod, destroy that and the other AM's shutdown. Take out the control "Dish" and they shutdown and you can study them and later build them (if successfully studied). Otherwise yes you have to destroy each one till they are all gone (I think there are 10 of them in total, and the Master Control Asteroid is typically in the closest orbit to star.)

5. Assault Shuttles.. are they build with the Assault Shuttle Cruiser? I have them in design screen, but not in build screen.

Yes

Answered earlier to review:
P = Pause (Can issue orders during pause)
Ctrl - Page Down - Slow down time (no speed indicator can do it 8 times, so try and remember now many times you do this)
Ctrl - Page Up - Speed up time (see comment above)

For speed controls, the next patch or two should add in an indicator so you know what speed you are set to.

Hope that helps.

With the monitor, if you survive the battle without killing the monitors you then goto your research screen and goto special projects, then research the monitor, after a while it will become yours and you have UBER base defense in that system, you just gotta hope that system is colonizable lol. In Sots prime u used to goto the trouble of controling a monitor just to find the planet was prohibitive and not being able to use the awsome defense.

You shouldn't be able to research the stations unless you kill the command becon (as was mention above somewhere) - so if that's not the case, someone please let us know, as that's a bug that needs fixing.
