What do the bars below units(when clicked) denote? I have looked all over and cant find an answer to what I thought was a really simple question. Thanks! :D

I think it has something to do with the number of individual divisions in the group, or something like that.

I think it maybe has something to do with the old Europa Universalis engine that HOI was built on. I can't think of any use for them other than to tell me how many armies I have in one province

If i recall right it has something to do with the strenght of each division.

The strenght, org, quality and type of division affects the bar.

So the longer the bar, the stronger your unit are.

The top bar represents the number of beans available for the division cooks to process THAT EVENING only. A lot players believe that the amount of beans the gauge shows is static, but it's not. It's relative to the time of day that the beans are properly cooked by the divisional catering battalion.

I've said it before and I'll say it again for all the newbies coming on board. Do not enter into combat without an adequate supply of beans.

Now... onto the second gauge. The second gauge represents the number of weenies (US), bratwurst (GER) or Hormel Spam® (UK) that is present in divisional/corps supply units. Again, the number of weenies are relative to the bean count where b = (w *41) / b+w.

To be honest, I'm never too concerned about the weenies (I'm not that kind of guy), but am hyper-aware of my current bean count. An army without an adequate supply of beans will never fare well in combat. Be especially careful if the Bean Gauge is RED; when it turns this color, that's a flatulence warning. You should immediately separate the affected division out of the province since the accompanying odor will lower the morale of any and all friendly units within 100km (-40 penalty in urban, -80 penalty in any confined space).

It's all in the manual (p. 427, sec. 9). :D

In all seriousness, I always crack up when this question comes up every few months or so since NO ONE has been able to answer what those gauges and colors actually mean.

That's not quite exact : IMHO it represents the TOTAL POWER of the army. That means the sum of strength * org for every division in the army. If you have in the army 12 divisions with 100 strength and 100% org, I think the bar should be at the max. (but as I play France and am either master of Europe or dead in 1941 at the latest, I quite rarely see an army of THIS strength actually exist...)

Now for the use of the color bars early in the game, when they are all only a few microns long, and you can not compare them until your forehead hits the screen, well, let's say it's to dismiss warmonger with bad eyes. After all if you are going for world conquest, and actually succeed, an't you supposed to have quite a clear sight to rule the planet ? :p
