So im not entirely sure if this is a bug or just some strange game design.

As you can see im fighting a war against Mercia. Mercia has a few tributaries East Anglia, northampton and Surrey.

If you look at the fight, you can see the only nation is Mercia, the rest is grey even tho im fighting them.
Again I don't know if this is a bug or just some strange game design, since tributaries is IMO rather stragne.

On this screenshot you can see the boxes below the enemy unit. Only one of them are red, but im fighting them all when I engage, they also siege my land.

Also none of these has the "Hostile modifier" so that is not the case either.

Can someone please tell me if this is some strange game design that I don't understand quite right, or if this is a bug.

That's a known (and long lasting) bug that I believe was fixed a few times. If some character A attaches their units to a 3rd party, and that 3rd party is at war with someone that A is not at war with, character A's units are still used in combat.

It is also possible to send a call to arms at tributaries, but I don't think that is the case this time.

I'm pretty sure those aren't Tributaries at all actually. Tributaries join wars as allies, those extra armies are neutral. It looks like Mercia is in 2 different wars, one of them against Pagans. My guess is that it is a holy war of some type, maybe a Prepared Invasion, and those other Christian realms offered to join the war. That's why the troops are all congregated in one location.

I'm pretty sure those aren't Tributaries at all actually.

That is might the case with Northampton and Surrey, but im pretty sure that East Anglia is a Tributary (Since I checked it.) But none of them were called in to the war as allies, which is also stragne, since there is no reason not to call in a Tributary.
