So what are the steps to landing on the New World (as Portugal). I have tried it once with colonists and was destroyed by large numbers of Indians. Do I take an army with me or what? Thanks for any advice.

Two regiments of infantry usually does the trick. I just park it there, and whenever the natives attack, they attack your soldiers before going for the colonies. They can not damage the colony if your infantry beats the natives back.

Colonization is one of my favite things to do. I've never played as Portugal.

You need to get diplo tecdh up to increase your colonizing range and yes you need to take an army with you. Africa takes more people than NA in parts of NA a single regiment will suffice. Maybe try to get colonies on teh African cost and then go over to SA and work your way up.

2 infantry 1 cavalry stacks. Undefeated even against high pop ferocious African natives.

Depends how far you are in. Very early mil tech, an army like that won't be enough in Africa, you'd need twice that. It's more than enough for anywhere in South America though.

Cape Verde is always the first province Portugal should colonise. You don't even need to take troops, because there are no natives there. From there you just hop over to Brazil, and keep building it up - and/or hop over to the Caribbean. At that point it starts to depend on whether you want to powergame (take all the rich colonies before the AI gets a go) or play historically (focus on Brazil and develop trade in Africa).
