The fleet basing rights of old won't work. So, what's a good way into the new world now? You have two:
As OPMs:
- Take a nation in the new world out, then deliberately lose your capitol in the old world. This requires diptech 3 and quest for new world only, though you will want to load up on cogs because it's a 1 way trip for them from many positions.
As any European Nation:
- Declare on one of the Irish minors. Get Connaught, diplo tech 7, and the 3rd exploration idea. This gives you 412 colonial range. The two island provinces in Greenland are 407 and 403 from Connaught respectively.
- Alternatively, you can buy a colonial range boosting diplomat, and reach the NA mainland directly at diplo 7 from Connaught.
- If you conquer two Irish Minors and release one as a vassal, you will be able to core the adjacent province (this might or might not require you having made a claim; haven't tested). This means that literally anybody who can ship forces there can core Connaught and reach the new world at diplo 7. For many nations, however, they'd be able to core that regadless.
Strategy for hitting Dip 7 quickly:
- Take the first 3 ideas while at diplo tech 3 immediately. This reduces future costs.
- After that, store up close to 999 points in dip tech before teching, EXCEPT at 7, where you take it ASAP. You want to double-tap 6 --> 7 as short as possible. This reduces the overall monarch point cost.
Here we are, in 1488, despite running most of the time at a DIP income of 2 from leader and 1 from an advisor:
Knights are well en route to the new world. Do try to ally someone to help vs England. I picked up Castille in this case (picture is a bit cut off; new graphics drivers on new comp that I'm sorting. England DoW me and Spain took over as leader + pulled in Portugal; their navy lost and they wound up releasing Wales due to the massive war score fail of never managing to land on Ireland with a conquest CB).
1488 is a bit later than Portugal and Spain can manage, but far earlier than anybody managed in NA and more importantly, will thoroughly blast the AI's pace to reach the United States. If you beeline the Carribean you could be a serious player there with this route.
