I am just curious. What is the prefernce of the more experienced players here: to play a nation that seeks to colonize abroad or a nation that is landlocked and you try to fight yourself to freedom. I know this probably depends on what side of the bed you get up on that day but for me, I like the land locked countries like Austria. But I have my love of playing England too.

Any reasons for your preference?

My dream campain would be to play as Prussia against a powerful AI in order to run a near run risk of being crushed by France, Russia, and Austria, and have my Freddie the Great mean something.

I don't like too much overseas empires either. I focus most of my attention on improving my own country and carving out neighbor states for myself or making them my vassals. But once in a while I will dabble on colonizing rare provinces that are either rich or stategically important.

I LOOOVE Colonizing. It's like getting a province with your culture and religion, with no badboy. If you're not playing a country that didn't colonize much, though, you're probably better off just picking up a couple of random colonies. Otherwise, you have to move the naval and innovative sliders pretty far to the left if you want to get enough explorers and conquistadors.

One thing you might want to do as a primarily European power is wait until you have a bit of a tech lead and take provinces from a pagan country. If you do it right, you can pick up some rich provinces, and they'll convert to your culture as soon as you convert their religion.
