the thing with your numbers is that it leads to MORE colonists than you could currently get now (with the basic things). right now its 1 from being catholic and 1 from cv, but your numbers lead to having easy access to 3 colonists a year, 1 from qftnw and 2 from cv, so it'd really make colonization happen even faster.
I have the problem that colonization happens too slow in my game, I played as Maya until 1700, the only country that had colonized america was Navarra, along the Virginia coast. Take that as you will.

While I like your solution, especially because it gives nonchristian nations a more level playing field, it makes the "settlement policy" province decision unusable in the beginning of the game. Now, that decision has its own problems, but I do like to use it - even if it has few gameplay effects.

I think the bonus based on religion is inaccurate. The push to discover (and then colonize) was driven by European trade being cut off from the Silk Road. I can't think of a perfect system to model this but perhaps the religion based bonus should be revoked and if a nation which owns a COT in Europe gets banned from trading in any COT that would be considered to be in part of the Silk Road then they would get the bonus.
It's an interesting idea. Are you sure the Eastern Europeans should be the first people to get the bonus, though? Most Europeans aren't in a position to upset Astrakhan's owners.

Seems odd to me that you're voicing opinions on the game as if they should be fixed, yet you're missing out on updates by being two expansions behind. Don't take this post as being malicious, it just doesn't add up to me.

The Iberian nations surely are, which is quite historical (I.E. Iberian colonizers)

oh I agree that colonizing is much to slow, and don't understand this viewpoint that it should be SLOWER, but I was giving numbers for to at least keep on par with what it is now, let alone try to slow it down as the op is looking for.

In my game as Burgundy all Eastern coasts of Americas, Caribbean, quite a bit of African coast were colonized by the end of 16th century. Main colonizers were GB, Portugal, Aragon, Savoy and the Hansa.

What current system prevents is historically timely colonization of Eastern Asia, otherwise it works fine.

I changed the time for provinces to core from 50 years to 100 years, and played a game as Japan. Perhaps it was a coincidence, but in that game, European expansion into the Americas was substantially slower. The New World was unoccupied until nearly 1600. Spain had explored the land, had the colonists, and was within range, and yet they chose not to colonize for a long time. I wonder if the risk of overextension causes the AI to defer colonies.

Make Trade Tech prerequisite to level 14 or something to make it happen along a more historical timeline. Perhaps also require a naval pre req, as it will stop landlocked nations from ever having a chance to build a colonial empire.

It probably starts to early as I rushed QftNW as Navarra once, got the azores and waitd for them to core. Sweet 1st into the Caribbean, got over there and Portugal still beat me to some islands. That was around 1475 or 1480 although you can get over there earlier if you try hard enough.

It's an interesting idea. Are you sure the Eastern Europeans should be the first people to get the bonus, though? Most Europeans aren't in a position to upset Astrakhan's owners.

It depends on what you consider the Silk Road. I would say that the Silk Road starts in China and terminates in Alexandria/Constantinople traveling through central Asia in the process (Astrakhan and Samarkand as far as starting trade centers are concerned...perhaps the one in Persia also). It isn't perfectly historical but it does simulate it reasonably well.

I agree that the Eastern Europeans would benefit early but that isn't bad either. Take away the horde settlers bonus and replace it with this too. The hordes were mostly fighting with other states over the right to tax the trade on the Silk Road. Plundering other states was a secondary source of income at best. When the Russian states began to challenge the central Asian states colonizing the steppe was, amongst other things, a way to gain control over these trade routes.

I knew that my undergraduate degree in Middle Age history focusing on Russia and Central Asia would come in useful sometime...:rolleyes:

Most countries bordering colonizable territory should get a small bonus to colonists. This way Norway/sweden/novgord could colonize those few provinces as well as allow expansion of the american tribes to expand as we see historically.

Yeah but i suppose that owning provinces near hordes for christians, make them more attended to colonize thou, than russian countries, so as many players say, end in lithuania/poland/austria/some random catholic country is colonizing horde and there is no place for russia. Also the problem is that if country get QFNTW as second NI, such country if it is spain ussaly colonize everything VERY quick. OFC if it does not, then it end in that there is no one in the new world, because everyone was not interested in it. But contrary to that, there can be like every european country want to colonize, so it leads to that the new world is full in 1600 - much more than it was in history, and also colonization start in game ussualy much time before it did historicaly.

EDIT: Mostly because the nations that take QFNTW try to discover EVERYTHING, even if they don't want to colonize it, leading to situation, where every, even those who did not take QFNTW colonize what they can.

About idea of bordering colonizable territory giving bonus to colonists : VERY good idea.

What would you people say to colonists generated by religion being a province modifier instead of a country modifier?

EDIT: I want provinces to only give colonists if they are of your religion, how would I script this?

EDIT: I want provinces to only give colonists if they are of your religion, how would I script this?

Code:
		province = {
			stability_cost = 20
			colonists = 0.1
			modifier = {
				factor = 0
				NOT = {
					AND = {
						owner = religion = THIS
						owner = primary_culture = THIS
					}
				}
			}
		}
Replacing the province block with something like this does not work, it changes all of the icons for the various religions down 1 after catholic and you always get the colonist for provinces of this religion. What am I doing wrong here?

I think the rate of colonization is fine as it is - I've only played a few games, but it varies a lot, depending on how the colonizer is doing in Europe. For example in one of my games Castille got large chunks eaten out of it by Portugal, Granada and Aragon, and while it did recover eventually it never became a colonial power. Whereas in some other games Castille is the premier colonizing power.

I do have a problem with the colonization of West Africa though. Even at the very end of the EU3 timeframe West Africa was mostly uncolonised IRL, but in the game it's often one of the first places to be coated with European colonies. I'm not familiar enough with game mechanics to suggest a solution though.

Colonization starts and CONTINUES too fast all along the game. If you let the default settings of land and sea spread provinces, by 1650 the whole world will be colonized. Fortunately, there is a very easy way to make colonization go slower without modding the game: change, before beginning a game, the “spread of land provinces” from 50 years to 75 (or even 100 years, if you want colonization to be even slower). Change also the “spread of sea provinces” from 25 years to 50 or 75 years. Of course, YOU (player) can still go to America and colonize it quickly (But that´s something you can control, so you can avoid it. AI won´t colonize as quickly because of spread of land and sea provinces will be far slower).

Or just give colonit bonus to ech provinces=only big contrie can colonise. Like 0.001 colonits ech.

I have been told that colonies are useless in DW as well

For that you should have to mod the game, which will close Achievements for you (perhaps you don´t mind). And I think colonies are not useless, but they take some time and investment to be profitable.
