Colonization question

Just curious,

As of right now - it looks like I will be able to start building my first colony star ship in 2204 and get my first colony up and running in 2205 (is that about the speed users & AI empires start expanding)

Is that about average for the game - or would I be on the slow side.

Just wondering as I am in a 1,000 star galaxy - in a corner - with few stars around (would want a few decades of exploring and setting up a couple colonies) rather than having a second colony and find out most of the galaxy has been taken up by other AI empires?

no that sounds pretty reasonable. In the future patch certain traditions will dramatically speed up the early game Colonization process, so if you want to colony rush early game and make sure you are not boxed in, you will be able to take those Traditions.
