An interesting way to add more life to the game would be to create factions, similar to those in the Tropico game. They can be based on the colonist's specialization (to expand something the game already have), and have a minium ammount of members before being operative as such. We can't talk about a "botanist" faction, for example, if there is a single botanist, if no colonist is a botanist, or if we're still building the place for the future colonists, right? Those factions may have morale boosts and penalties, according to things in the game. For example:

Penalty: Food scarcity / Water scarcity
ENGINEER
Boost: Over 250 stored machine parts / Over 250 electronics / Over 250 polymers
Penalty: Machine parts scarcity / Electronics scarcity / Polymers scarcity
GEOLOGIST
Boost: Over 500 stored metals / Over 500 stored concrete / 3 Transports
Penalty: Metal scarcity / Concrete scarcity / No working transports
MEDIC
SCIENTIST
