Is it possible to colonist the british isles, as I havn't tried to colonist islands yet and i think it is the only island in the game that does not begin colonised.

There's a land connection between a province in southern england and a province in northern france, which is also a capital to a tribal nation.

Not sure which provinces and which nation, but there is a connection. Colonists can then travel across.

Try the Rome Enhanced mod if you wish to play british nations, I can confidently say it is an excellent mod.

Does anybody ever see it actually get colonized? What about Ireland?

Seems like adding it to the map, at least in non-mod versions is pointless.

I've seen southern England get colonized in a normal game before. It is rare, however.

If someone were so inclined, they could play as Rome and quickly annex the Gallic minors, including Atrebates. Setting up a trade route between Rome and Atrebrates aught to raise its civilization level quickly, assuming you can defend it from barbarians. As you colonize, switch your trade routes around so that Rome is always "romanizing" provinces in the isles to speed up colonization. Trade grain to them as well, to boost population.

I bet if you did this, you could probably get a foothold in Ireland before the game ends. Whether it's worth the time or effort is a different question.

Even if it could not be reached realistically in the vanilla game, do you really think they are not going to take advantage of all that empty space in upcoming expansions. ;)

I'm in my 4th game as Rome, and currently and in year 598. I started back in 474. So I'm almost 130 years in, and I specifically started this game to see if and how fast I could colonize Britain and Ireland. As of right now I have conquered Gaul except for some barbarian provinces that I'm still trying to colonize and have finally established a foothold on the Isle of Britain. I am soon to colonized my second British province, I am still waiting on my Civilization Level to hit 50 it's at around 48.5 or so and I already have the 10+ population. The thing thats taking so long is the Civ Level in Atrebates is usually at around 30 by the time you can successfully conquer the country, and even with 3 trade routes from your 70+ Civilization provinces it still takes forever to get that Civ Level to 50. Then after that each British/Welsh/Scottish/Irish province has a Civ Level of 25-30. I am hoping that once my foothold province Cantii hits 50 Civ that I'll be fortunate enough to colonize the three bordering provinces within a matter of a few years and in raising their Civ Levels the neighbor bonus will start helping and speed up this process. If it doesn't it is going to be very hard to colonize all of Britain, much less make it to Ireland before endgame time. I'll let you know.

I am playing a game in which I colonized Atrebates (sp) by 550. It is currently at 33 civ. I just set all my trade routes to provinces with 80 civ or better. We will see how long it takes to raise it to the right level.

You can do the math to see how long it will take.

Hover the cursor over the civ rating. You should get a pop up that shows what items are influencing the rating.

To get the number of years until you reach 50%: (50-current rating)/(civ rating gain/month)/12.

e.g. current rating is 48.5 and the province is getting .02 from neighbors and .03 from trade. You need 1.5 to reach 50 and you are increasing by .05 per month. 1.5/.05 = 30 months or 2.5 years.

You can do something similar with population. Hover over the percentage to see if you have any modifiers. Grain is the most important, making population grow at 4% instead of 1%. So if you have 9.2 (hover over one of the population numbers) now, next Jan 1st you'll have 9.2 times 1.04 rounded down. Population updates only once a year.

You would be correct, but the drop down is not the rate of civilization. It is wrong and civilization is much slower. I posted it in the bug forum, check it out. Its another annoying bug. But I'm almost at the point where I can colonize the next province, so hopefully it won't take too long. And I have 4 provinces sending goods, including a 100% civ Rome.

I think you can do it with pop but not with Civ rating, as the gain is a part of the difference between the 2 areas and not between the 50% and the % of the target area. Civ gain is subject to decreasing gains.

Hmmmm...it seemed to work when I was watching it. Colonized a year or two after the date I predicted.

I'll go look at it again.

(time passes)

I just realized what you said. The neighbor gain and trade gains aren't constants. If I start with .02 and .03, those values will decrease as the difference between the provinces decreases.

In the example I gave, I was already close to 50%, so the variance was small, but probably accounts for the extra year or two beyond my predicted date.

What you say is true, it does decrease as time goes by. But if you have 0.02+0.03+0.05 = 0.1, it won't give you 0.1 and it won't go up each month by that much. Its a broken feature.

Each of the 0.02, 0.03 or 0.05 are rounded and could be 0.0151, 0.00251 and 0.0451 giving around 0.08, giving a span of 0.08 to 0.12 added to a displayed number that is also rounded so you could observe it giving 0.07 to 0.13.

Sorry, you are just plain wrong. I had a total of 0.19 from 3 TRs and neighbour bonus. It still wouldn't go up by 0.1, so that just blows your theory out of the water.

Okay, here's the plan to get into Britannia.

Finish the Pyrhhic war ASAP. Don't worry about getting any territory.

Immediately backstab Massilia. End tribute, end alliance, declare war. Conquer both territories and take Emporion as tribute.

Build fleets and armies to gather in Emporion.

From Emporion, attack Lusitania. Conquer both territories and take Lusitania as tribute.

Use Lusitania as a forward base to attack and conquer Atrebates.

Get grain into Atrebates from a high civilization province and wait for population and civilization to rise.

Extremely ahistorical, but I think it's the quickest way to get there.

P.S. Watch your triremes carefully. They will be spending a lot of time off unfriendly shores.

Or you can do it faster and easier.

Do what he says about the Pyrric War or win it, either way, its your choice.

Colonize Bonnia then invade and annex Helvetia and its allies.

Then use Helvettia and the territories you just annexed as a staging ground to annex Atrebates.

Now send your ship on a one way trip around Iberia, to make sure the barbarians in Britain aren't invading your newly won province.

Okay, I just ran a quick one to see how it worked.

I followed my plan until I was unable to provoke the Lusitani into a war. So I asked for military access and they agreed. At that point, I realized that I could have done the same with Emporium. I didn't need to conquer Massilia. All I needed was a base closer to Lusitani. I tried to get the Cantabri to do the same but they don't like Rome very much. Three gifts raised their attitude by 0.80, so I sent the boats from Lusitani to Atrebates, landed the troops and annexed Atrebates in 481. The battle was over so quickly that their allies didn't have time to enter the war. I should have kept the boats in the area so they could dock for repairs after the annexation, but I sent them back to Lusitani for repairs and they were all lost at sea. Damn those Cantabrians. They just sat there and watched them all sink while I asked for military access one more time.

I opened a trade route with Roma to get the .05 increase in civilization. When forum became available in about 500, I built one in Atrebates and opened a trade route with Ager Bruttius for a .04 increase. Then it was deal with the everyday matters and wait....for 23 more years. The increase values changed to .04 and .03 when Atrebates got up to about 48%.

Established the colony in Cantti in 523. I didn't have to worry about clearing out the barbarians. They attacked across the channel three times while I was waiting. They even chased me out of Atrebates one time, but the stockade held long enough for me to teleport some reinforcements for the counterattack.
