If you want to colonize but you don't have an overpowered trade node like Britain / Portugal / Spain / Norway, what is the purpose behind your colonialism?

I'm thinking you can colonize all of Australia and the Philliphine Trade Node and collect income from there? Maybe even conquer the Malacca Trade Node once you've gotten that far?

To receive tariffs from colonies/overseas provinces you need a strong fleet. With that fleet you can direct trade or even collect directly in your colonies if the 50% no capital penalty is better then having everything directed away.

tax gets a -90% malus for being overseas and instead of production u get tarrif, which becomes shit in late game cause the only ways to increase it is slave trade+one idea+one adviser while trade is an exponential growth. Even as China which has THE worst nodes (no inflow to capital) u can still move ur capital to nanjing and use the Hangzhou node to bring in American trade. So there is not a single non-landlocked nation that u cant trade with.

Even with -90% tax and tariffs, it's better that you're earning it and not your enemy. Besides number of provinces doesn't seem to affect anything except overextension if it isn't cored and maybe some events, but that's it, once the colony turns into a city, you'll be earning something, of course you'll need to have ships to gain that.

If your share of the home nodes is small it would make much more sense to collect the trade overseas instead of funneling it home, and if you dominate the continent well enough dominating the trade nodes to effectively collect should consequently be easy.

I expect people to attempt to move their capitals overseas if they're heavily invested in the new world too.

Not really. For tariffs you need big ships, for steering trade you need light ships.

Colonize/conquer some land near precious trade node, build 100-300 light ships and collect trade:)

In your example in Mallacca - move ships to Mallacca + incoming trade nodes (like China) and you have OP trade too:)
