Are you/were you so threatened by England that you needed to be in a coalition? Or were you just trying it out for a modicum of extra protection?
I can't really imagine ever joining a coalition against another nation; maybe only if I was playing a very small, weak nation, the target was an aggressive blob that hated me, and I couldn't get sufficient allies for protection. In few circumstances, basically. I really regard it as a feature for the AI.
This thread being the reason why. Once you join, you can't leave for five years, nor at any point during which they or you are at war - which can conceivably stretch that five years to 10 or 15 if wars are being fought regularly by you or they or both. During which time you are hugely limited in what you can do against them, whether you are attacker or defender in any war against them. One might also forget to leave when you finally are able to (there's no popup when the term expires, I think)
I can't currently imagine being in a situation where I was in so much risk, which I couldn't prevent with alliances that I wanted anyway, that those limitations and annoyances were worthwhile.
I might be wrong, and would be interested to hear if other players do join coalitions. But my feeling currently is that coalitions are rarely worth bothering with.
