So I was playing as a peacefull Mexico, when USA suddenly declared war. So I scrambled my 3 semi mobilized divisions to hold off the horde and when I had to retreat (I actually won with my dug in 19000 troops against 50000 the first few rounds) I noticed in my relations screen, that I was in a colonial war with USA, and thus enjoyed, not caring for those stupid colonies in the north, I just waited for a peace offer (knowing that my normal provinces could not be claimed in a colonial war). And the time came and USA merrily suggested I give up 1/5 of my NORMAL provinces (that they had occupied) and only one colonial!

What gives....???

from what ive seen its based solely off vicotry pts reguardless of the war foguth..losing battles etc wracks up a score..relative prestige ratings may have an impact..a high prestige can demand more in peace than a lower prestige nation

form what i understood in thew rules colonial wars means they can only fight in colonial lands..so simply wait out the war after hes taken your colonies...imaybe you will get a white peace freom em...the sucky part is your vulnerability to rebels :(

I dunno if thats the case with mexico, but what you describe only applies to colonial wars between civilized powers.

Civilized vs uncivilized (might be the case here) is FFA. The civilized nation can annex you in one swoop too, no matter how large you are, if they take all your provinces. This comes with a somewhat heavy bb hit tho.

Mexico is civilized :)

I've had some weirdness with that as well. As scandinavia I declared colonial war on the US, and behold! Their colonies in africa weren't fair game. However they invaded my colonies in africa, so I think colonial war might malfunction a tad.
