do you ever get a chance to diplo-annex colonial vassals? right now as japan im in the process of beating all the europeans to colonizing the whole US and south american east coasts.

or do you have to wait until an independence war? can you annex provinces for yourself in an independence war? seems like its gonna be a long while until any of my colonial nations will even desire independence, so im trying to understand all the mechanics ahead of time.

They seem to be primarily designed to inhibit the player and form stumbling blocks...trying to understand them in my england game, still looking for a good strategy policy here on the forums. Im guessing having the conquest of paradise DLC disabled may be the best option.

so you can't even take provinces for yourself in an independence war you win? thats a real bummer, and doesnt make any sense. guess ill be playing with that DLC turned off from now on.

whats the point of colonizing the new world if you never even get a chance to own it for yourself?

i conquered all of central america for japanese mexico, and all of western south america for japanese colombia to gobble up, stationed a big portion of my army there for half a century to deal with all the uprisings while they cored and converted it all. for all my effort im getting like 5 ducats a month in tariffs... looks like my dream to own the whole of the new world and move my capital to panama will never come to fruition.

i mean, i could easily colonize all of the carribean and US east coast right now but im only sticking with 4 provinces in each north american colonial zone because if i colonize a fifth province in any zone ill lose control of what i built, and lose my base of operations in the atlantic. it just makes no sense gameplay-wise, pretty frustrating.

Colonial nations are not part of a DLC, you just can't play as one without CoP.

You get the massive trade income from the new world (much more important than tariffs) at a very low cost. All you need do is form a CN in each region, and then you can just take the rest by force and your CN will core it for free.

those are good points. this is my first eu4 game really and trade still vexes me- i havent taken the time to look at how much trade income they might be giving me.

i guess ill just continue with this game with a change of plans. i was already setting the stage to invade castile, who conquered naples, and is in a war with france right now and is out of manpower. i think ill waltz into naples for a shot at all the universities in italy instead of focusing all my efforts on the new world.

im looking at the wiki at the moment and it says that while CoP was added at the same time as patch 1.4, its the DLC itself that added colonial nations in. ill just test it myself at a later date. thanks for the replies guys

Also note that CN don't give you trade income directly, they produce goods therefore boosting trade value and transfer trade power to you that helps you increase your trade income if you can utilize it.

You can own only one university. And you really can't disable CNs.

You can, easily, as long as you dont care about ironman or achievements..

replace common/colonial_regions/00_colonial_regions.txt with a blank txt file.

But you better be a patient man if you want to colonize all the Americas post 1.8 one province at a time on your own. CNs cut down on micro a lot.

I always wanted the option to annex them for good if they revolt though.

It is perfect logic and historical acurate the way it is for me. At that time travel to the americas was an adventure, take a very longe time and was very dungerous. The colonists most of the time lived among the natives, with no contact with their mother country, it was perfect natural to feel like you are no longer a citizen of our original contry, most of them were sons of the original colonists and did not even knew their mother country and fell that they are just paying fees for someone very far away who don't give a shit about you. And becouse of it you don't have more Europeians in the americas, aside from little outposts like the guianas.

The only thing I hate is when I have a PU over a colonizer and then integrate this country, that the provinces of their colonial nations are not transferred to mine, but instead I have then 2 colonial nations in one colonial region. It is only a visual problem, but I dont like different colours when I'm doing the colonizing game. I'd rather prefer the option to merge the two colonial nations

The wiki is quite poor in that it simply assumes anyone reading it has all the DLC. The DLC merely allows you to play a colonial nation, they exist in unmodded Vanilla. On the other hand you can easily mod them out, as noted elsewhere in this thread.
