I am playing first time with new 1.33.2 patch.
Currnetly as Portugal I have two coloinial nations.

As far as I can see these colonial nations are not sending their colonists to new provinces.
Is this working as it should be? In previous patch they where sending them like crazy.
Or maybe the issue is with my colony types (Crown Colonies)?

Try to subsidize them ~4 ducats per month for 10 years, that should already be sufficient for them to colonize 2 provinces at a time
Or colonize some more provinces for them, so their economy grow. I noticed this too in my games... :( Annoying.
They will start colonizing at some point - provided there is space for colonization! Natives now form gigantic blobs in North America, fielding ~60-80k troops each. In 1550! That's just absurd... :rolleyes:
Make it so your colonial nation has a high opinion of you (100+). When they stomp on your colony enforcing peace is your only viable option for saving it.

In 1.32 they'd go into debt to maximally colonize. Honestly, it was generally a good idea compared to the other goofy stuff they get themselves into debt over.

Now they generally need to be subsidized at the cost of the colonists +1... there seems to be a ceiling function in the code where there should be a floor, because if you subsidize them 4.2, they won't send out 2 colonists (when broke), but they will at 5.

Likewise for self-governing, you need to subsidize them at 7/tick. The best way to pay for it as early Portugal is to smash Mali for Bambuk and Bure, both of which have gold mines. Mali is a pushover at this point, and you can secure the bag in two easy wars.

In my test runs, even subsidies like 10 d/ month do not make them want to do anything. In comparison, regular subjects with colonists from their missions (for example Ternate) are just as eager as ever to colonize as before.

I think CNs will only colonize adjacent provinces, which means that a Caribbean one may not do much at all in that department once they've backfilled the big islands. I usually give them a province in southern Florida or northern SA so they can colonize the mainland too but it won't happen on its own.

The 1.33 patch notes say they fixed this, though i haven't played a colonizer this patch yet so i haven't tested it myself.

Another things I've just seen multiple times in 1.33 (and almost never before):

1. My colonial nation in the Brazil region has plenty of empty provinces (in BRAZIL!) to colonize, they are getting subsidies of 4.5 ducats / month and instead of colonizing, they fabricate claims on natives in the Peru / La Plata colonial region and declare war on them and expand into the "wrong" direction.

2. My colonial nation in Australia has several times (even simultaneously) been declared upon, with a CB I've never seen before ("Fight back the colonizers"), they usually lose that war against 3-4 natives and I have to intervene and enforce peace (hich they never accept, even if I've already stationed 100k troops in Australia ready to crush them; they are about 8 Mil Techs behind) which brings me into the war to save their ass.

The first one may well be WAD and a consequence of an improved AI. Personally, if possible I'd definitely conquer the gold-rich Peruvian provinces rather than use the same money for colonizing low-dev provinces in inland Brazil. Sure, Brazil can give valuable trade goods but that is far from certain.

Should have specified, I tested with California as Korea and Brazil as Castille (so no Islands) no colonization, but they did spend the money building forts on their capitals, a bit of a waste considering that there are literally no other nations in their region.

It's just the game's way of gently telling you that colonial nations are doodoo and unless you want them for historical or roleplay reasons you're better off going to Indonesia. If you actually want functional colonial nations you're going to have to give them some pretty hefty subsidies forever. And don't forget that they only colonize provinces they have a land connection to.

Same for me, its making me pull my hair out as sitting back and colonizing is my fav way to play but now i cant even do that

They raised the amount of income the ai wants to have before starting colonies, send your new CNs more subsidies and they'll colonize just fine (assuming there's land available).

but why completely change that for the player and still let the ai go ham? thats such a major disadvantage that on top of the colony maintenance cost now
