I have two problems going on in my current Ironman Inca game. I started as Cusco, united the Inca, and westernized. It's currently 1550.

1. I have very large colonial nations in the Caribbean and in Mexico. I formed these nations before westernizing. They currently are stuck in the Andean tech group. They also will not build any military units at all. Castille's small Caribbean colony declared war on mine, and my colony is just sitting and doing nothing. How can I make them build units? Also, can I make them westernize?

2. My trade capital is currently stuck in the horrible, horrible Lima trade node. Ideally, I want to have my trade capital in the Eastern US, although Caribbean would be acceptable. Of course, if I build a decent number of colonies there, they will form a colonial nation that I can't use for my trade capital. I could colonize and extend by border one province at a time north until it reaches the Caribbean node, which would be decent, but I'm not even sure if that would work. How does the game decide when a colonial nation will form? If the colonies are directly connected to my capital, will they still form a colonial nation? If I extend my borders north until they touch my Mexican colony, will I absorb the colony? I would try this myself, but it's an Ironman game, so I have limited tools at my disposal.

1) I don't know anything about this, sorry.

2) Colonial nations will form if you have 5 provinces in a single colonial region which is distant overseas.

"Colonies are considered distant overseas unless any of the following is true:

- The province is on the same continent as the capital.
- The province has a land connection to the capital; crossable straits are acceptable.
- The province is close to the capital. Though the exact threshold is not currently known, provinces that require 5 days or less of base diplomat travel time are considered close, and those that need 8 days or more are distant. [please improve]"

If you want your capital in the Caribbean trade node, there are 10 provinces in South America which are in that node. Cumana, Maracaibo, Caracas, Orinoco Delta, Uyapari, Guajira, Altagracia, Coro, Llanos, Zaraza.

Move your capital to either of those, they won't form a colonial nation. If you move your capital to Eastern America, I believe that all/most of your current provinces may become colonial nations unless you have a continuous land connection.

EDIT: You can double check if the province is in South America by going to the Regions map mode and hovering over the province.

They aren't building units because they literally cannot build units. Andean tech has no units (every nation that starts with Andean tech is manually assigned South American units) and colonial nations simply use the default units for their tech group. Since westernizing doesn't give new units, your only hope is to annex your CN, re-core it, and get a new one.

South America is everything south of Panama and the Caribbean.

To collect in Chesapeake/St/ Lawrence, colonize all the way up there (release and conquer your Mexico CN once you have a border) such that you have a direct land connection to your capital, then move your trade port up there.

I know. It's actually been the topic of some discussion (I personally first noticed it as a westernized Japan and then promptly checked other cases) , and it also screws over horde CNs and makes Mughal and westernized nation CNs weird. Horde CNs have a lesser version of the Andean problem (stuck with horde units forever because as a non-steppe horde, they can't reform their government and get better tech and units) and Mughals and westernization nations simply get different units from their overlord (Mughals are Muslim tech and Indian units, but their CN will be Muslim units, and westernized nations will always make CNs with western units).

Actually, they did just start building artillery, but nothing else. An army of all artillery is pretty useless.

Question. Both colonial nations are pagan. I have the exploration finisher idea that gives a CB vs pagans. If I release them, can I use that CB and take them in one swoop?

Meh, this bug is a real game-killer for me. I'm just gonna quit the game and avoid doing this in the future. On top of the bug, the Inca have few/no good events, so I am constantly hammered by -1 stab events since that's almost all that can roll for me. It's a real drag, especially if I am going to have to re-core the entire Mexico region. I call BS.
