You have to babysit your colonial nations until they grow so big they dominate their region.
Sometimes my colonial nations don't even move. They declare war on natives and do nothing. Very common bug for me....
CNs love to declare war and lose when they have the power to win. Worse, they declare wars they can't win. Happened to me in many colonial games already and it's just extremely frustrating to lose lands because of dumb AI.
