So I know that when colonizing a province your colonist automatically changes the provinces religion and culture to your own. Personally, I find that to be ahistorical. Is there a file that can be modified so that colonizing a province won't lead to it automatically acquiring your religion and/or culture? Thanks.

The colony consists of colonists of your culture and religion, why wouldn't the resulting town be of your religion/culture? You kill/convert the natives while colonising, that is what is taking you 5+years. When Europeans went and colonised the Americas did they not follow the religion of the people that went there? The natives were driven out and didn't live on that land any more, or if they did they were a minority and looked down upon.

Natives were in fact the majority populations of the colonial dominions in the Americas. The only exception would be the 13 Colonies. French colonies were effectively empty, and Spanish colonies, even after the drastic decrease in native populations due to disease, had a predominately native lower class that far outnumbered the number of peninsualres that came over from Spain. Religious conversion was not as fast as you seem to believe (in fact, in large parts of Latin America pre-colonial mythology still exists, intertwined with folk Catholicism), and colonial culture was by no means the same as the culture of the mother country. It was completely distinct. That's why I wan't to, at the very least, turn off the culture conversion mechanic of colonization. It's just not realistic.
