In game, colonial flags are cut in half, the left part is the same as the left part of the mother country, the right part is a color specific to the colonial region. The representation of only the left part of the mother country makes it difficult to recognize some flags. For example the French revolutionary flag has three vertical stripes, blue, white, red, and we can only see blue and half of white on their colonies’ flags, which is esthetically weird and makes them difficult to recognize.
I suggest to resize the entire mother country’s flag (divide height and width by two) and place it in the up left corner of the colored colonial flag, as it was historically the case for some british and french flags. This would feel more realistic and esthetically more pleasing. See examples below:
