I know this has probably been asked a million times, but what sort of buildings would be best to build in overseas provinces?

I would imagine that everything except Production buildings(and Gov beyond level 2)would be good to build, but can I get an assurance on this?

Unless the trade good is gold there's no reason not to build all of the level 1-4 buildings in every province assuming you have sufficient magistrates and money to do so (and you can make an argument for building them in gold provinces as well). There are just buildings with far lower priority in colonial areas (mostly the military/naval beyond docks) due to the way income from those provinces is determined.

What's the payoff period on a marketplace? In home provinces, I think I figured it would take something dumb like 250 years for one to pay off based on how much value it would add to my center of trade, and how much of that value my merchants capture.

you get money out of marketplaces like 4 different places.

1) it increases trade value which directly increases production income

2) it increases the value of your COT

3) it increases the price of most new world trade goods

4) I lied it only does it 3 times

Trade tier buildings in colonies increase trade value and tariffs.Marketplaces also greatly increase demand for many colonial goods no matter where build (bigger demand -> bigger trade value). Building churches everywhere is a good idea if you have stability problems/a lot of magisters. Production buildings in colonies with CoT's since they will be very rich (also gov buildings for city hall).

4) I lied it only does it 3 times

Toll! Though it's only for non-oversea province. It's Trade Efficiency * Base Tax.

Government buildings aren't affected by being oversea, but generally avoided unless you're colonizing as non-western tech.

Army and Naval are avoided except for docks, which has the best return rate, oversea or not. 50 * 8 / (trade value) for the break even year (disregard if it produces gold)

Constables are always good, but consult the ledger building page and sort by tax income. 50 * 4 / (tax value) for the break even year. Avoid the rests unless it's a CoT, which you should go to at least lvl 4, maybe 5.

Marketplace is the 2nd most cost-efficient building by itself, and great when you have a big colonial empire. It also leads to trade 5 and 6 for the national modifiers, which is always a plus unless you're playing with 5.2 beta. Though it's still better to focus on non-oversea rich provinces over colonies.

The buildings still confuse me. Docks improve the tariffs an overseas province gives? I suppose it makes sense, since tariffs are based in part on Production, but I only built a dock, drydock, and shipyard in the province I wanted to build my colonial fleet in. They should all get docks? Do I want to go up to Canal in all of my overseas provinces for its own benefit? I know you already endorsed the two highest-level trade buildings overseas.

Your tariff is pretty much 50% tax and production combined, at the cost of 90% tax and all your production income.

That makes tax % and production % buildings about half as effective compared to a normal but similar province, and make direct tax terrible unless it's got a CoT.

Though docks do provide the faster repair benefit, so is still useful when you plan on waging colonial naval warfare.

docks increase production efficiency in the province they're built in by 25%, which is absolutely massive early game and still really good late game.

build them in every coastal province that isn't producing gold, grain, or wool, and the second two are still decent if you have money and magistrates to spare.

So the production buildings are not so good as the tax buildings? I dont know what to build. I mean, I have no idea what to build. I will build something. I think.

A 25% boost to production is pretty useless if the base value is low enough. It takes much too long to pay back to be worth it, and the subsequent naval buildings aren't really needed in any noteworthy number.

You're neglecting the impact a dock has on demand for high value colonial goods. The higher the demand, the higher the demand/supply number that determines the good price. This affects the production income of every province in the world that produces an applicable good.

For an easy way to see this in action, take a save where you are at/near world conquest. Move all armies out of grain provinces, tick over a month and look at the grain price, then move an army into every grain province, tick over another month and look at the grain price again. While this example is due to armies reducing the supply of grain in the province they occupy, not increasing demand, the result (in effect) is the same.

Trade buildings like the marketplace and stuff are a must for high value goods like tobacco, coffee, etc. You could also use these places to post office spam later.
Naval buildings are also not a bad idea, personally, I like having a more peaceful and isolated place to build my ships.
On islands I usually max forts so I don't have to worry about them as much in a large war.

Are you sure that is correct? The buildings give an increase in 25% POINTS, not 25%. In that case an overseas building with base tax 6 will give the same increase in income as a base tax 6 building in your home land. Sure the homeland building will generate more tax overall, but I think the INCREASE in tax will be the same and that is what matters when deciding whether to put down buildings or not.

I know it works that way with non cores, (tested it), see no reason why it shouldn't be the same with overseas provinces as well.

Census tax = (base tax + workshop + stock exchange + CoT) * (100% + or - national/provincial tax modifier - 90% oversea) * (10% base + 90% core + constable + treasury)

Constables give the same bonus whether it's cored or not because these two modifiers are additive.
But the oversea modifier is multiplicative with constable, so it does kill most of its value.
