Everytime a country fails to colonize a province, the attemps line adds a 1%chance of sucessfully. Try colonizing Indonesia without slaughtering the natives and you will see this quite dramaticlly.

Up to a certain level that is. There is something along the line of -20% to colonial success, then +1% per colonialattempt until +0% is reached, removing the penalty.

I don't know if it is successes or failures that boost it though?

I saw a new colonization FAQ for betas somewhere, the one in the FAQ forum is old..

There is no reference at all to the colonialattempts figure in the colonization FAQ. There, it only refers to fixed bonuses for certain nations (i.e. there is no reference to scenario-specific bonuses).

I am still at a loss as to what this figure does. If, as you say, the bonus is limited to +0%, from an initial -20%, then why do several countries start scenarios with colonialattempts = 100?

As I said, the one in the FAQ section is old, (vanilla 1.07?) and betas have another..

I found the
latest colonization FAQ thread

And as for why they have 100 when 20 would be enough?
I'd guess that 20 is a number that was tweaked up to and is still open for minor tweaks, so 100 was taken to not have to edit in scenarios if the figure would be increased. Perhaps.
