cS = At the end of this date the province became a Spanish colony, as moderately large settlements within it had been established or taken over (similarly: cD = The Dutch, cE = England, cF = France, cP = Portugal, cSw = Sweden).
tS = At the end of this date the province became a Spanish trading post, as trading posts or missions within it had been established or taken over. (similarly: tD = The Dutch, tE = England, tF = France, tP = Portugal, tR = Russian).
- No Settlement = The province had virtually no European settlement of any kind in 1792, despite rival claims.
- Unknown and no settlement = The province was ‘terra incognita’ and had virtually no European settlement of any kind in 1792, despite rival territorial claims.
- Uninhabitable = The province had virtually no European settlement of any kind in 1792, despite rival claims, and it should be made into ‘true’ terra incognita to reflect its inhospitable, impassable nature. Or at least MAKE ITS ATTRITION LEVEL 0, so you can pass through at your peril, and make settlement impossible.
- Inca = Part of the Inca Empire in 1492 (larger than presently depicted).

ADIRONDAK [100] dF 1615, dE 1688, tE 1749 Ogdenburg (not Fort Henry), US 1782. The French colonynames file wrongly places ‘Fort Carillon’ here. Fort Carillion is another name for Ticonderoga - est.1755 in Ticonderoga province. It also states that FRA #100 should be called ‘Chouagen’, neither is true because there were no French settlements in Adirondak province.
AIRES [223] dS 1537, cS 1537 Buenos Aires (abandoned 1541), dP 1570, cS 1580 Buenos Aires
AISEN [177] - Uninhabitable
ALABAMA [55] dE 1673, cE 1775 Atlanta (not Augusta, which isn’t where EU ‘Alabama’ is), US 1782.
ALAGOAS [206] dP 1640, cP 1745 Vitoria de Conquista (not Sao Salve nor Aracaju)
ALEUTES [186] dR 1745, tR 1784 Pavlovsk Gavan (not Kiska). In 1784 Russia established her first trading post in Alaska: Three Saints Bay. It became the city of Pavlovsk Gavan in 1792 (if I knew the Russian for Three Saints Bay I’d name it that). I have assumed that this island represents Kikhtak, laterday Kodiak.
ALLEGHANY [61] dE 1673, cE 1750 Charlotte (not Camden), US 1782.
ALTAR [15] dS 1695, cS 1695 Tuscon (not Yuma)
AMAPA [183] dP 1640, cP 1745 Macapa
ANTICOSTI [123] dF 1534 – No Settlement.
ANTIGUA [147] dS 1494, dF 1535, dE 1580, dD 1595, cE 1632 Saint John City (this needs adding to the colonynames file under ENG 147).
APPALACHE [66] dE 1671, cE 1788 Fort Lee (not Charlotte), US 1782.
APURE [155] dS 1540 – No Settlement.
ARAXA [212] dP 1750 – No Settlement.
AREQUIPA [170] - Inca, dS 1535, cS 1540 Arequipa
ARICA [172] – Inca, dS 1537, cS 1540 Antofagasta (not Arica)
ARIZONA [18] dS 1540 – No Settlement.
ARKANSAS [51] dS 1542 – No Settlement. The French colonynames file places Fort Orléans here, but it should be in Missouri.
ARTIGAS [216] dS 1750 – No Settlement. If it were settled it would have been called Salto not Santa Fe.
ATACAMA [173] - Inca, dS 1536, cS 1536 Valparaiso

AZUAY [163] - Inca, dS 1534, cS 1534 Quito
BAJA [13] dS 1720, cS 1720 La Paz (not Santa Rosalia)
BANGOR [112] dF 1580, tF 1605 Fort des Pentagouets (destroyed by the Dutch 1674), dE 1625, dD 1674, US 1782. Though claimed by England this province was only ever settled by a French trading post 1605-74, after which it was virtually abandoned, i.e. it reverted to a neutral ‘native’ province. England’s interests in the province occurred later, the great timber port of Bangor started in 1791 and grew to fame in the next century. Though never colonised by the English, the colonynames ENG 112 entry should read ‘Bangor’ not ‘Portsmouth’ to allow for its potential premature development - whilst ‘Portsmouth’ is in Penobscot province not here.
BARAHONA [143] dS 1496, cS 1496 Santo Domingo, dE 1562.
BARBADOS [152] dS 1502, dF 1540, dE 1575, dD 1600, cE 1623 Bridgetown.
BAYOU [45] dS 1543 –No Settlement. The EU colonynames file claims that France had its trading post of Bâton Rouge here. This is wrong, Bâton Rouge was established in 1722 in Biloxi province.

IOWA [75] dF 1673 - No settlement. The French colonynames file places Fort Bourbon here but this province was never really settled in the EU era. If a French colony name is needed for a potential colony in FRA 75 then ‘Dubuque’ would suffice, local colonists built sawmills and lead mines there around 1788 (after French political control had been lost and within 4 years of the end of the game).

MICMAC [113] dF 1555, tF 1604 Île Ste. Croix (not Saint Jean). Abandoned 1605, no settlement thereafter. EU places a fictional English settlement called ‘Penobscot’ here. Having two ‘Penobscots’ in the game (a province, and city in another province) is too confusing for words. No such colony every existed here. OLYMPIA [5] – Unknown and no settlement.
ONANDAGA [91] dF 1651, dE 1685 – No Settlement. US 1782. The French colonynames file places Fort Niagara here, fort Niagara was in Niagara and French power did not extend to here (though they destroyed the native town of Onandaga in 1696 no-one settled this region - so, in game terms the Iroquois were never territorially defeated but became ‘vassals’ of the French.

RIO GRANDE [41] dS 1530, cS 1697 San Antonio (actually Loreto came first, San Antonio in 1718 - but San Antonio is more famous).
ROANOKE [64] dE 1585, cE 1565 Virginia (not Roanoke) abandoned 1590, re-established 1682, dD 1690, US 1782. Using the name ‘Roanoke’ is repetitive and Virginia is more accurate, if the colony must be a city name, then call it Norfolk.
ROSARIO [222] dS 1545, dP 1570, cS 1600 Rosario
SACRAMENTO [8] – Unknown and not settled. The colonyname file lists SPA #8 at San Francisco. This wrongly misplaces San Francisco (which is in from province #9 Monterey). If the province had been colonised by Spain in the EU era it would have been called Sacramento. The towns of Sacramento (est.1836), Santa Rosa (1854), Yuba City (1854) and Chico (1860) were all founded after the EU era.
SALTILLO [25] dS 1579, cS 1579 Monterrey (not Torreon). Note: the Monterrey in Mexico has two ‘r’s, the Monterey in the U.S.A. has only one.

SHENANDOAH [70] dE 1693, cE 1762 Morgantown (not Pittsburg), US 1782. The colony name should not be ‘Pittsburg’ because Pittsburgh was created after 1792 in Irondekoit province around Fort Pitt. Before 1758 Fort Pitt was Fort Duquesne, so both the English and French colonyname files are wrong with regard to Shenandoah province.
SIERRA MADRE [10] dS 1766, tS 1771, cS 1781 Los Angeles
SITKA [3] - Unknown and no settlement. The Russian trading post of Sitka named in the colonynames file RUS #3 doesn’t belong here unless the Russians establish it early (it was established after 1792).

THE FALKLANDS [230] dF 1712, dS 1712, dE 1764, cF 1763 Isles Nouvelles, cE 1765 Port Stanley, cS 1770 Islas Malvinas. Colonised by settlers from Argentina, England and France, the Falklands first appeared on the maps of Amédée-François Frézier in 1712, who was working for Spain. Evidence of their discovery in the 16th century is too dubious to credit. Commodore John Byron claimed them for Britain in 1765. They were Spanish from 1770 until 1833 when Britain’s claim was internationally recognised.

I don't know BiB. You might have fogotten a couple. You should go back and double check your post carefully. :D

Good job and thanks! I just joined the fun so.. sorry if I'm a little late.

It's difficult to tell since the map is not exactly what you'd call accurate and it doesn't relate much to any political organization ever existing in the zone but I guess I could make a few additions and corrections regarding colonies in South America:

Chile is particularly badly represented in the map.
Arica [172] Well, actually Arica is located north of Iquique (Moquega?). Province names seem right according to cities (except for Talca) but probably a little bit displaced to the south so probably we shouldn't mind the name of the provinces. Antofagasta seems about right at those latitudes, although it is a coastal city.

ATACAMA [173] - Inca, dS 1536, cS 1536 Valparaiso

Atacama [173] Called Valparaiso is debatable. Valparaiso is obviously not in the Atacama desert. Easily 500 km. to the south. However, judging by the relative location of the other cities, one could say the latitude would be right for Valparaiso. Valparaiso is a coastal city, the most important port of Chile, but Atacama is not a coastal province and judging by the location of the town I'd probably go with Santiago (founded in 1541). It's the capital and it's been the administrative center of Chile during and since the colonial times.

COQUIMBO [174] – Inca, dS 1552, cS 1552 Valdivia (not La Serena)

Coquimbo [174] Following the same reasoning (latitude), I'd locate Concepcion there (founded in 1550)

Valparaiso [175] I'd put Valdivia here. Founded in 1552 with the name of Santa Maria La Blanca. Destroyed by natives in 1599, reconstructed by a Dutch expedition in 1643, repopulated and renamed Valdivia by Peru's Viceroy in 1645.

Displace San Carlos de Ancud to Talca [176]

Now to the east (my country)...

Where to start?

Ok, Tucuman [219] seems right... Not many Incas here by the time. I think the Inca empire is a little overextended to th south in the game. Anyway, San Miguel de Tucuman was founded in 1565. A few towns were founded in the zone before but none of them prospered.

JUJUY [220] dS 1544, dP 1585 – No Settlement. Despite being listed in the Spanish

Jujuy [220] Here we have a little problem with the map again. I don't know how they came up with this name being east of Tucuman. With some imagination we could locate Santiago del Estero here (founded 1553), although this city is relatively close to San Miguel de Tucuman and there were no more towns to the immediate east.

CORRIENTES [221] dS 1545, cS 1573, dP 1580 Cordoba

Corrientes [221] There's no way, no how Cordoba could be located here, sorry. Cordoba is south of S.M. de Tucuman. Terra Incognita according to the game, something I don't understand since there were many many cities in that zone since the 1560s. Anyway, One could put Corrientes here (founded in 1588) only it's on the other side of the Parana river (the river in the map). Actually, Resistencia is on this side of the river but it wasn't founded until 1875 or so. Maybe leaving this zone without a settlement would do.

NEEMBUCU [218] dS 1526, dP 1536, cS 1536 Asunción (not Ascuncion)

Neembucu [218] Oh Oh, Asunción just doesn't seem completely right there. It's up north (Terra Incognita again), but it's a shame to leave it out, one could make an exception. It was the most important city of the region until Buenos Aires was re-founded in 1580.

PARANA [217] dS 1526, dP 1555, cP 1683 Colonia do Sacramento (must be added to the Portugal colonynames list), cS 1705 Colonia do Sacramento (not just Colonia), cP 1715, cS 1750, cP 1762, cS 1777 Colonia de Sacramento

Parana [217] Colonia do Sacramento was founded by the Portuguese in 1680, not 1683. It was a fort equiped with artillery. Spain captured it almost immediately and destroyed most of it. Spain had it until 1683 when it was given back to Portugal again and then the history goes as described.

The Falklands [230] It's not confirmed but some investigators say they were first discovered by Esteban Gomez ( a portuguese who deserted Magellan's expedition when they got to Magellan's strait) in 1520 and were later navigated but not explored by the Dutch in 1600.

Ok, I probably bored you to death with this, that's all I had to add for the moment. I'm Outta here.

Southeastren US.

Alabama is misnamed. If you could replace the name of the area I would change it to Cherokee since they were the main indians in that location. Augusta, much as I would like(I was born there), is not a good city name for this area. It looks like the city would be in the area where the north Savanah province border jags north. Otherwise I would say Augusta would be fine. The city name probably should be a generic North American English city name since that region was settled late.

Roanoke - Not sure what city was first but New Bern was the old capital of North Carolina, so I would nominate that city as the one to use instead of Norfok. The area looks firmly in the North Carolina area more than the Virginia area.

Santee - Wilmington is in North Carolina which would be Roanoke not Santee. The Santee river is in South Carolina, so I would guess the province belongs to that state. Georgetown would be the major settlement name there for the English.

Alleghany - Charlotte is northeast of here and would really be in Catawba. Revert back to Camden. Basically Alleghany, Carolina, and Santee make up South Carolina while Apalachee, Catawba, and Roanoke make up North Carolina or at least that is what comes to mind when I see these provinces. Also I would probably change the name of the province to Yamasee(sp) since they were the main indian group in this area.

Catawba - see Alleghany.

Carolina - I would rename this province Edisto after the Edisto indians. Also the French had a colony called Charlesfort early on in this area but it was abandoned by the colonists. John Ribaut established it and the colony was named after King Charles IX.

Seminole - English city name should be St. Augustine. I have never heard of a city called Kingstown there.

Also the Charles river should be the Savanah and the Savanah should be the St. Mary's river.

I know this is a late post but I have not been on the board for a long time. Nice work on the posts.

Mughal Bengal

Also, should not Ganges and Howrah be part of the Mughal Empire in the game? The Nawab, Murshidkhuli Khan, revolted sucesfully in 1707 and established a separate nation. In 1757, Siraj-ud-daula, was defeated by the British... which is when the Mughal's used the Casus Belli sheilds on Bengal :)D ) to declare war on the Brits, and get their butts kicked.. giving the British "vassalage" (the rights to administer) Bengal.

ueberraschung

Greven,
you are the man!!! I believe you could get a PHD for your work on colonization. considering the limitations the map imposes by misnaming and misplacing things i dont believe your work will easily be improved upon.

Hmmpf...:) Well actually I thank you on the behalf of Matthew Wallhead and Heiko Brandel, who actually spent many weeks researching this. I merely made a short check and assembled the info.

But I do also think there are lot of limitations on the map and remember these to gentlemen saying the same. :)

actually its fine Cleveland was settled in 1798 not 1789 like I thought.

Ah, but my hometown of Cincinnati was settled in 1788. Although, even though it is technically in Erie province, it does seem a bit odd to have a city so far away from Lake Erie be the settlement for that province...

As for Kentucky province, you might as well use Louisville for the settlement. Louisville was founded in 1778, only four years after Harrodsburg, and, unlike that settlement, it grew to become the the largest city in the state.

Just a few notes:

The province of TOBAGO should be rather renamed into TRINADAD - the bigger of the two islands of the present day Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Additionally i have a few notes on Polish provinces, and/or names for possible Polish colonies.

1) The word for NEW in Polish is NOWA for female names and NOWY for male names - how to recognize that a name is female or male - quite simple - female names end with A, say NOWA PODOLIA or NOWA MAZOVIA, but NOWY MOZYR or NOWY POSEN, additionally it may be added that if a name ends with E the proper word for NEW is NOWE, eg. NOWE PODOLE (Polish name for PODOLIA), or NOWE PODLASIE (Polish for PODLASIA).

2) I move that the following names of provinces be used and seen for players playing Poland-Lithuania - these are the Polish names, since the Crown was clearly dominating the Union

Province - Capital ----- Polish for Province - Capital

Danzig - Danzig - Gdansk - Gdansk

Western Prussia - Thorn - Wielkopolska - Poznan (The in-game province of POSEN is misplaced)

Posen - Posen - Kalisz - Kalisz (or Calisia - Calisia - from latine)

Podlasia - Lublin - Podlasie - Lublin

Mazovia - Warszaw - Mazowsze - Warszawa (clearly a mistake, either Warsaw (eng.) or Warszawa (pol.) or Varsovia (lat.)) - besides Warszawa was not a capital of Poland till in XVIth century - Xth-XVIth century the capital of Poland was in Krakow, Mazowsze as a province was also a semi-independent county (just like Pommerania i late XVth century)

Silesia - Breslau - Slask - Wroclaw

Eastern Pommerania - Kolberg - Pomorze - Kolobrzeg

Podolia - Cherniowitz - Podole - Czerniowce

Ukraina - Kiev - Ukraina - Kijow

Pripet - Brest Litovsk - Prypec - Brzesc Litewski

Polotsk - Vitebsk - Polock - Witebsk

Livonia - Dorpat - Inflanty - Dorpat (Inflanty was a typical name used to name that province throughout the history)

Kurland - Riga - Kurlandia - Ryga

Eastern Prussia - Konigsberg - Prusy Ksiazece - Krolewiec

Welikia - Vielkie Luki (or sth) - Wielkie Luki - Wielkie Luki

Chernigov - Chernigov - Czernichow - Czernichow

Krementjug - some strange name - Krzemieniec - Krzemieniec

Best regards,

Africa & more

What about Africa btw ? There's the Elmina Portuguese gold "colony"
from 1482 till 1640 then to Holland.
As for Asia there should be a Portuguese trading post in Hormuz from Albuquerque's time (151?) till 1620 back to Iran.
Nice work but so huge one always find some thing or two to fix.
One could include the Angola (Luanda) colony from 1578 which was Portuguese till 1975 except between 1641 & 1648 while Dutch-occupied.
Same goes for Mozambique (one coastal colony or 2 along the Zambezi) but i have no precise dates right now should be at the same time though. Until 1640 some other TPs in the east coast of Africa or islands such as Zanzibar.
+ Dutch colony of Table/Cape of Good Hope from 1652 till Napoleonic wars then to England.
Nice work but so huge one always find some thing or two to fix.
