This is a brainstorming and concept-building thread for a potential mod based on the collapse of the Soviet Union. I lived through the collapse in Ukraine, and have a thorough knowledge of the history of the period. I plan on making this mod packed with events. I would like to ask a technical expert if it is possible to show the player the full extent of the events other countries decide (i.e., instead of a short blurb saying "Russia chose X in Y", when playing as non-Russia, the actual event should appear on screen, with the decision picked by Russia highlighted (or perhaps the player can decide every country's decisions, to make the world develop as he wants it? This would be even better) Without this, I doubt this mod will be enjoyable).

There will be a number of "event paths" that the player playing as Gorbachev's USSR (start date will be somewhere from 1986-1989) can take.

-Zhirinovsky's LDPR, a populist, ultra-nationalist, anti-reform party secures victory. This will be a situation similar to Hitler's rise to power in post-WW1 Germany. Russia will play an extremely aggressive, pan-Slavic, chauvinistic, anti-Western, anti-American, revanchist role in foreign affairs. It will want to take back territories lost by the USSR, including Ukraine, the Baltics, Central Asia, etc. Foreign policy will be based on unification with Slavic nations, and the ability to take back East Germany due to it being inhabited by Slavic tribes in the middle ages. Domestic affairs will be very authoritarian, perhaps even totalitarian. Oligarchs will be punished brutally. WW3 (or WW4 if you consider the Cold War to be WW3) is near inevitable. I predict this will be the most fun path for the player to take.

-Zyuganov's CPRF secures victory. Socialism is restored. The player can decide of the belligerence of the renewed Russian Soviet Socialist Republic. It can support other Communist parties in the former USSR, or simply liberate them from capitalist slavery outright with military arms. Foreign policy will consist in closer ties, and an alliance with the PRC and other Socialist countries. Zyuganov himself is a very mild-mannered man, so there will also be the possible "path" of very mild, non-antagonistic foreign policy. The player can choose to roll back democratic reforms, risking revolt and resistance, or continue with them.

-Boris Yeltsin secures victory. The player will be able to choose between the radical reforms Yeltsin pioneered, or even more radical reforms, that may lead the country into collapse and civil war. If the player plays smart, he can avoid this, and history will follow the course it took in real life, with Putin coming to power in 2000.

Virtually all possible scenarios will be available for the player to play.

Wars will be numerous: the Afghan war (which the player can ahistorically continue), the Chechen wars, wars in Central Asia, Yugoslav wars, not to mention the possibility of WW3/WW4.

Also, the collapse of Yugoslavia, too, will be in the game, as will be September 11th and the war on terror.

Input is welcome. I am currently in the process of laying the foundations for this mod, so do not expect a playable version for a long time. Any ideas that will make the mod more fun will be considered.

If I'm not mistaken, the 1989 mod is specifically about the August coup coming to fruition, and does not take into account the other possibilities, such as the Soviet Union's collapse, Zhirinovsky coming to power, etc. Of course, inter-mod cooperation is always best. Perhaps our mods could be merged one day.

It would be silly to remake all the work on ministers and tech from zero too, so your plot might just fit as another scenario for the 1989 mod better than stand alone thing.

Alternately they may end up being subsumed into his work.

Regards: Decisions - no, not really Unless you create a 'Director' offmap nation that triggers the events and runs the entire show via events (which is a very interesting concept in and of itself)
