Can Paradox use player created art finally? Right now, EU coats of arms are replicas of flags, and it is not good. What i suggest is that they go to Mcguinn's site, dload the stuff there, and overwrite it old files with it. Voila.

Yes-let's lose the cross of St. George for England-it's so innappropriate in the original game at times, especially if you diplo-annex Scotland.

Yes-officially after the 1800 Act of Union with Ireland I suppose, but it was certainly in use much earlier after the 1707 Act of Union with Scotland or even earlier.

But for the Union Jack to be valid, England has to at least own Scotland, otherwise the presence of the cross of St. Andrew would be rather inappropriate.
Actually, the real problem as i said, aren't the change of flags (but it is problem too), but fact that Coats of Arms are dull, they are replicas of flags. Still...i would like to see France-Englad combined flag until they get out of 100 Years War...or at least when they annex France! [come on, Paradox, please do something with coats/flags!]

But wasn't on eof the Stuart kings using the Union Jack, say 70 years beofrehand to try and drop some subtle hints to Scotland?
The Stuart kings were also kings of Scotland (in fact, that's where the dynasty first ruled.) It was a personal union (in a way) from 1603-1707. So they would have been entitled to, really.

Nope. It would only appear if the two countries merged on an equal basis, which EU certainly isn't equipped to handle and I don't think EU2 will be either. Whenever England annexed a country, by force or diplomacy, it remained England and the flag didn't change.
Ack no. Coats of arms would be unidentifiable when carried by armies, and not far short of unidentifiable even on trader and diplomacy screens. That's the whole point of having a simple flag like a cross on a plain background, or a single emblem.
Well, the thing is that in 1419 the emblems/flags of most of the countries were far more different to the 1800s flags of the equivalent countries. To make things worse (or more interesting), very few states made it from 1419 to 1820 without changing names, political identities or totally transforming, merging, or developing into entities unrecognizeable by 1419. I.e. England changed from the three lions to the cross and then as britain to the U.J., France had similar evolutions, and Russia got the two-headed eagle from Byzantium when the latter collapsed, half a century after 1419.
Some sort of evolution in names, emblems etc would certainly add flavour. At least in the big states.

I don't think that would be as much of a problem as you say-the bigger problem would be the unfamiliarity of some of the coats of arms etc to us modern gameplayers.
I would prefer McGuinn's Three Lions to the cross of St. George as the English flag if there's no way for it to evolve into the Union Jack.

The three lions still are the coat of arms of England. Never has changed since it was first introduced.
And now it's most famous for it's place on the football-shirts.

Very good point, Heyesey. And even the three lions were supplemented by the French feurs de lis (more appropriate in the beginning of the game)and Irish harps later on for GB.
But I meant more or less that the principal emblem that marks Engand changed. It was the coat-of-arms of England for the first years of EU (an emblem that still exist today), but later on in the chronology of EU the red cross or the UJ had become more important in merking England's (or Britain's) presence. It is the *principal* symbol of the state that changed, and maybe EU2 could reflect this.
