Right now, the shape of the Coat of Arms is determined by culture, not by religion.
This is wrong, and makes the game confusing.
Let me explain.
Right now, Arab and I think Turkish culture get the Coat of Arms which is round with a Crescent inside.
Right now, Mongol, Pecheng, Alan and Cuman get the coat of arms which is round without a crescent.
I'm probably missing a few, but the rest, mostly Europeans get the normal, full triangular coat of arms.
Heres where it starts to break down.
After a few hundred years, you will start to see Arab Catholics, Pecheng and Cuman Orthodox, Greek muslims and so forth. Thats fine and interesting.
The problem is, the Coats of Arms are all wrong. Arab Catholics and Arab Orthodox use the circle and crescent coat of arms, an Islamic symbol. Thats just messed up. You see a Crescent Coat of Arms and think infidel, but it turns out to be a Christian.
It's also confusing because the baltic pagans and the finnish pagans use normal triangular CoAs, while the Cuman, Alan, Pecheng and Mongol pagans use round CoAs. Usually, a county or two will have an Orthodox Pecheng or Orthodox Cuman ruler. This will add to the confusion, as the circle without crescent Coat of Arms is used for Muslims, Pagans AND Christians sometimes.
And of course, the baltic pagans, using their normal triangular CoAs don't stand out from the surrounding Christians. And when Greek Muslims start showing up, you've got all three religions using the triangular shields. You can't tell religion at a glance anymore. Confusing.
The current system is confusing and useless. You cannot tell, by a glance at the CoA if a nation is Pagan Muslim or Christian. All you can tell is what culture group it is from. This information is not useful. If someone is Arab, Castillian or Cuman does not really matter for game mechanics. It matters what religion they are, since that is what changes the war mechanics.
I have a simple proposal to make this CoA system more sensible and to make it provide more useful information.
All Christians, no matter what their culture use the normal triangular sheilds.
All Muslims, no matter what their culture use the crescent shield.
All Pagans, no matter what their culture use the Circle without crescent shield.
This would allow us to tell the religion of a country by a simple glance at it's coat of arms. And it would avoid silly situations like Arab Christians with a crescent coat of arms. It would be an improvement all around.
Please consider this change for a future patch.
