Why does coastline in my game have +25% Development Cost?

Is it not supposed to be +10%?

Also, why would coastlines have increased development cost at all?

Easy access to the coast would make development easier, not harder.

It should be the same as grassland and farmland.

I think the idea is that you are on a narrow band of land along the sea (think modern Japan). But I agree, it should not be more than +10%.

Pretty much all major settlements were based around rivers rather than coastlines. Most coastlines don't actually have plentiful resources like trees, arable land, construction stones and freshwater. A lot of coastal settlements were fishing hamlets rather than fully fledged towns for this reason alone.

That said no matter the ratios on terrain development will always be fundamentally flawed because it's linked to MP instead of ducats. Economy matters when?

Realism is bad for game.

From a realism point of view i would think that forest provinces should be the cheapest to develop.
And coastal provinces would be more expensive because they would have consumed more wood in the past to make ships and buildings. And they would maybe have to ship in wood from elsewhere.

Perhaps there's a better term for island settlements since "coastal" tends to be rather broad term in English (especially after the maritime age kicks off). The only thing that comes to mind for me however is Seagirt (archaic and basically never used) and archipelagic (which implies that the province is made up of several islands, which might not actually be a massive issue with EU4's scale)

But there are 'coastal' provinces all along mainland North and South America, in some of the historically easiest areas to develop!

I believe it's supposed to be 25%; I remember it was increased after it was pointed out that it was far easier to develop say, Orkney than any of mainland Norway.

Why not call one province island terrain "island"? Or "Tropical Island" and "Arid Island" since you have both types in the world.

Coastline makes sense on larger islands and areas in the world defined by their coastal nature. Venice, for instance.

But southern New Jersey should be forest, nit coastline! :eek:

Add 'Tropical Island' and 'Arid Island' for Islands that are not glaciers or historically defined by other features.

Why not call one province island terrain "island"? Or "Tropical Island" and "Arid Island" since you have both types in the world.

What would that serve though? It would be additional terrain types, almost identical to how they are already, just with a different name. Cant you already get "coastal" terrain type provinces with the "Arid" or "tropical" modifiers?



Anyway, the reason it is "coastline" is because the defining feature of such territory is not that it is an island, there are plenty of islands that are more fertile, the defining feature is that all (or most of) the settle-able land is along the coast, causing all the issues that such land has.
