I'm sure a lot of players invade Sweden by sea with their amphibious assault supported by a couple of Bismarcks.

When you say coastal waters around Sweden, are you talking about near Stockholm or around Denmark?

Because I never sail anywhere other than the Sound in HOI3. I drop PARA on Stockholm and hit the other areas in the south.

This is what it could look like once modded/DLC'ed.
The immense variety of ship types in this era can lead to a completely absurd tree with countless branches : this would be bad. But so is the excessively simplified tech tree the devs offer us. The land tree and air tree are good, and one of the reason they are is because they offer easily accessible variants. Instead of carrier planes, tank destroyers and self-propelled artillery having their own trees, or branches, they became auxiliary researches to plane and armor techs.
Ships have no equivalent.

Just imagine if it looked like this :

The much debated question of Panzerschiffe and Coastal Battleships could be solved easily if they were made subclasses of Heavy Cruisers. PBs would be more costly, but gain increased firepower and range, while CBBs would have a dramatically reduced range, but acquire increased armor, firepower and a bonus while fighting in coastal areas.

Watching yesterday's world war wednesday and listening the player explaining how, despite his best efforts in fortifying the border, the Soviets could easily launch amphibious attacks made me realize how the Scandinavians minors, which would be among the most played minors, would benefit from such a change.

I reckon this is a great way to do it. Same story for Frigates/DEs and maybe submarine variants (cruisers, supply ships) as well (in a mod, not in the base game, although I'd obviously not complain if they did end up in the base game :)).

If we were looking at coastal defence forces, MTBs and Torpedo Boats become more relevant as well - Sweden had the Sveriges, but also had MTBs, torpedo boats and a number of small submarines to support them.

These are just a few game-significant locations where you can't use battleships. I'm sure there are a few more.
Took a look at the new size of water provinces and indeed I have to agree with you that the map might have some provinces with shallow waters. Still I'm not convinced that the amount of them is enough to justify this mechanics, which probably aren't that easy to implement since it requires more AI programming, not only on ship movement but also on other AI levels, like amphibious invasions.

But I'm always up for more complexity, and this sounds like a good idea for a DLC feature, after all, everyone loves IKEA ;)

But seriously, take another look at the water depths around the islands to the South & East of Stockholm, around Mariehamn and in the Gulf of Bothnia through which the iron ore passes through for half the year.
Big battleships (with 30 foot+ draughts) can't operate in these areas while a coastal defence ship with a 20 foot draught can.

Around Denmark, I really couldn't say, but this is the area where the Kriegsamarine had a nasty habit of running aground too isn't it?

Indeed. Everybody loves IKEA.

And yes, I hope for a mod/DLC as I wouldn't expect PDS to spend the amount of time the developement of this feature would require.

But, as I've stated several times, the trerrain type needs to be included in the base game and, I think, it has been. But (and this is just my opinion) to be done right, "shallow water" shouldn't just give penalties/bonuses to BBs & CDSs. BBs, BCs and fleet carriers simply can't go there & many of the late-game CAs would be seriously pushing their luck.

Is it? I have no idea, actually. The only warship in German service I know of running aground right off the top of my head was Emden. I'm sure there were others, but I have no knowledge of these things.

I do know that Nimitz ran his first command aground (a destroyer) in an area of bad maps, but that just shows you the low quality of naval officers who run their ships aground. ;)

Maybe they are just bad at navigating ships, and it has nothing to do with hulls. ;)
