Coastal defence and marines? Am I the only one, who hates them?

Except for a few tags, you need a significant investment to get marines (idea groups or 1000 ducat one per TC improvements). For that investment you could get far more manpower than you can utilize sailors via marines.

I suppose that it's true I wouldn't go out of my way to get marine forcelimit, but I do use marines with tags that gets them. Perhaps paradox could attach them to some more NIs and missions (Venice gets them from missions), as well as increase their percentage. Maritime and naval ideas need some help, they could be added there as well.

I have more issues with Marines (gimmick unit) than with coastal defenses, although it was ruined a couple of my fleets due to my carelessness.

I was wondering: Am I the only one who hates coastal defences? My vassals and colonies are building them, bancrupting them in the process.
I would be happy to pay 10€s to get them out of my game (I am playing only ironman to hunt the achievements, using mods would disable it).


Hey why the hate on Marines? They're just almost useless. Just ignore them no need to hate them.

Coastal defences are utterly useless as it stands and actively harming the AI by making them waste money and building slots on them.

I’m currently playing a multiplayer game as the Knights and have developed Rhodes to 60 development, and you’d think that if ever you want to buy some coastal defences it would be on a high dev island capital like that, but I still do not have enough building slots to even consider building one as all the other buildings are just better. And if I can’t build them in this scenario, I don’t see when you would.

Adding buildings slots would help. I’d gladly build some coastal defences, but not if it means I can’t build my .20 ducats producing workshop or 2000 manpower adding barracks.

Hey why the hate on Marines? They're just almost useless. Just ignore them no need to hate them.

One could make the argument that Marines were a half-assed attempt to make the coastal defense's landing time less awful ie selling a (bad) solution to a problem that they invented (likely for the sake of selling said solution). I would understand the hatred on that basis, though I don't think the person quoted is saying that.

In the new Beta, the AI is more sane with spending and it does seem to decrease the amount of Spam of Coastal Defences.

The issue seems to be that it was hard to detect for the developers as in the end game most coastal defences are replaced with manufactories.

The issue lies around 1470 - 1600.

I've done some testing and concluded that the best solution to this is to make the AI prioritize logical locations to build this building

I prefer it to be build on Islands alone.

by changing the Ai code from:

ai_will_do = {
factor = 1
}

to

ai_will_do = {
factor = 0.5
modifier = {
factor = 5
island = yes
}
}

this seems to make it so the AI will only ever build it ontop of islands.
