Instead of being a single, all-encompassing line in the diplomatics. There should have multiple coalitions to better represent each country reason to be in part of a coalition.
Think of the "Factions" tab in CK2, that also gained its own menu and maybe one will get an idea of what I mean. There vassals, sometimes with divergent objectives, have something akin to limited alliances to demand common goals from their liege. Ultimately, after achieving a % of the liege's military strength, they'll try to enforce a demand, and should the ruler deny it then it's war.
The obvious difference is that coalitions have external members, but that could be worked out. Instead of % of the liege's force you would see a "war eagerness", reflecting the total disposition of the coalition to start the war. This way you could prepare yourself to coalitions wars, maybe even solving it diplomatically before war breaks. The interface could also give some useful info such as war military level and approximate military strength of the countries in the coalition.
Examples of coalitions purposes: Aggressive Expansion (akin to what is right now); Conquest/Colonization of the Americas/Africa (e. g. England allying with Aztec to return cores conquered by the Spanish to reduce Spain's trade power); Religious/Culture aggression; et cetera. Maybe some specific ones for HRE and others. Example, "Release the electors: Austria and some of HRE vassals are not satisfied with France gaining emperor status by vassalizing four of the seven electors. The Habsburg won't simply leave or be left as a mere member of an empire that should be rightfully theirs. Prepare for war."
Also as additional suggestions:
- You should minister the participation in your own coalitions, ultimately deciding when, or if, you should go to war. There would be no penalties for delaying your participation in a small period (up to three months maybe?) but you would gain diplomatic malus for longer periods. Should you not join the coalition war at all (or after a determined period. 12 months?) you'd gain penalties associated with not answering a call of war from an ally, but to a greater extent. I. e., a greater prestige loss and diplomatic penalties with the other members of the coalition.
- The number of coalitions one country could have at one time against multiple countries, and the possibility of joining a coalition with its leader being outside your continent, could be determined by your diplomatic level, or any other relevant factor. That will allow you to have multiple coalitions against multiple countries and would restrict, for example, Vijayanagarg forming an implausible coalition with Inca and Congo against Portuguese expansionism.
So what do you think? Does anyone see this system working?
