There are many things that could be tweaked/fixed about coalitions. I think the #1 problem with them, though, and the thing that exacerbates the annoyance they cause so many people, is the complete lack of clarity.

Consider:
- EU IV has, everywhere else, made the logic behind the scenes super-clear. That nation won't accept your RM? You can see exactly what factors affect that, including a numerical value for each, and know how close you are to getting to "yes".
- When you offer a peace deal, though, the AE you'll actually get with each nation is not as clear as it could be.
- Really what's lacking, though, is a sense of when nations will JOIN and LEAVE coalitions. I'm getting 20 AE with Provence? Will that make it join a coalition or not?
- And goodness knows there are no UI hints as to when nations will leave a coalition. I've seen nations with +50 relations and single-digit AE still in a coalition against me.

Obviously, given the way coalitions currently work there is no hard and fast rule about how much AE is too much: it depends on a huge number of factors. But I think if more of those factors could be revealed to the player, it would reduce a lot of the complaining about the topic currently.
As it is, the system is almost entirely a black box except for the number AE, with little said about what that number means. That seems counter to the design philosophy of EU IV.

Regarding leaving a coalition - remember that they cannot leave:
  • Until 5 years after they first joined
  • if you are at war (with anyone)
  • if they are at war (with anyone)
This can lead to situations, probably like you are seeing, when a nation stays in a coalition for many years, despite great relations. When the five year minimum was up, they were at war, then by the time their war ended, you were at war, then by the time your war ended, they were at war... etc.

If you really need someone out of a coalition against you, and you have good enough relations, form an alliance with them. This will automatically force them out of the coalition immediately (even if you/they are at war.)

This is a stealth-drop from the coalition. As soon as you ally them, the coalition icon disappears from their Diplomacy, and they disappear from your list of Coalition members. But you do not get the normal popup saying that they left.

I guess the game has a check on alliance-formation that deletes them from a coalition against you, because it would make no sense being in a coalition while allied.

As well as all the normal requests for Coalition improvements - to make them more strategic, to provide some sort of cost for members, to provide some risk/reward in dealing with them, etc etc - I fully support UI changes to make them less opaque.

In particular:
  • Show when a nation joined the coalition, and therefore when they are eligible to leave (similar display as for Truce)
  • Show why a nation is in the coalition - give an explanation of the numbers/factors involved; attitude, general relations, AE.

Yeah, I agree there are ways for a well-informed player to figure out some of the mechanics, particularly with the aid of the forums. (Sadly, the files don't expose many of the coalition mechanics.) But as you say, there's a lot of room right now for ways to make the system more transparent.

I would very much like to see this added.
