I was playing as Castile in a coalition war in support of Burgundy when the Last King event fired, France and Austria both got their cut of the Burgundian territory, and for some reason the war was still active and I was the last one on the defending side when the war should have ended.

On this very topic, the Coalition War just happens WAYYYYYY too often.

Burgundy is always a dumbass and gets into a war with Provence, which is fine, but it not only annexes Bar (which is imperial territory) but fully annexes Lorraine. This basically ensures a coalition war. It happens almost every game and Burgundy always gets stomped on.

Agreed, it seems like every game I play Burgundy is doing great until it takes both Bar and Lorraine without considering the aggressive expansion.

You guys do realize that Burgundy annexing Lorraine and the coalition war that resulted is exactly what caused the downfall of Burgundy in real-life history, right? Complaining when that exact circumstance is happening in game is a bit disingenuous...

If it was a scripted event, sure, I would understand. But currently it just boils down to an AI that isn't aware of HRE AE. I'm not sure that the AI is aware of doubling AE penalties for HRE states.
Burgundy also usually declares war on Provence for Bar, Lorraine only gets dragged into it because they are vassals of Provence. If Burgundy only grabbed Bar, AE wouldn't be so bad.

As I'm aware, in real life Burgundy fell because Dude #1 wanted Lorraine. Dude #1 died during the war. But that wasn't what gimped Burgundy. His successor, Dude #2, was a good dude but died during a riding accident with no successor himself, leading France to claim it. None of this smells of "Giant HRE Coalition blob steamrolling Burgundy."

Venice often takes all of milan except their western province, seems like they should do something about HRE ae

Dude #1 was Charles the Rash. He declared war on Lorraine, annexed it, got, among others, the Swiss mad at him, lost a few battles to the Swiss, Lorraine revolted, and Charles subsequently died in battle trying to take it back. He left only a daughter, Marie, as his heiress. At that point France charged in and took Burgundy proper (this was the event that "gimped" Burgundy), leaving Marie only with the Low Countries. I can only assume she is the Dude #2 you're referring to, as she did die in a riding accident, but by that point Burgundy proper was long gone to the French.

The point is, I'm not so sure Burgundy is aware that Bar and Lorraine, even though their overlords aren't part of the HRE, are still part of the HRE. Beyond the scope of Burgundy and Lorraine, this is more a general question.

"Is the AI aware of annexing HRE territory whose overlord(s) aren't part of the HRE?"
"Does it pay attention to 'X Countries will joined a coalition against us if we use this peace treaty'?"
"Does it even pay attention to AE?"
"Does it weigh the military strength of it's allies versus the folks who would join a coalition?"

These are all things the player is aware of, but is the AI paying attention?
