We are back in business at Colossal! My Christmas break took slightly longer than expected since I managed to get sick and had to stay home last week. Some of the team members have also been out of office for the same reason so the start of the year was a bit underwhelming to say the least. However us Finns and Finn-minded people over here won't let a little flu keep us down for too long so we are working full speed and planning what to focus on this year.

Last autumn was quite rough for us in terms of the amount of work and there were a lot of little moving parts working with different partners like football clubs etc. For a while I wasn't sure what would come of it all but I have to say I'm so very proud of my team and how they handled the workload. Natural Disasters was so much fun to work on, especially having built cities since 2013 when we started the development it felt really good to see them burn. I believe that Natural Disasters is our best expansion to date. I also think it would be even better if the next expansion would be UNNATURAL Disasters!!! Just kidding, it's not going to be that :D

Before the holidays we asked you guys to share with us your suggestions and feedback and I'm super happy to see so many great ideas mentioned! We'll be looking into those to seeing which ones we can incorporate to Cities: Skylines and which ones are better left to a later date (or never). We are not all powerful I'm afraid, but it's really important for us to know what kind of things you wish to see in the game and we do our best to take your suggestions on board!

I have a couple of questions for you to start the year: Which one of the three expansions we have released so far is your favourite - After Dark, Snowfall or Natural Disasters? Or do you skip the post-release content and rather stick with the base game?

What also is interesting for me to hear is that how do you feel about the scenarios and the scenario editor? Do you play scenarios or create them yourself? Are scenarios something you would like us to release in the future?

Cities: Skylines was released almost two years ago and it's truly amazing to see how invested you are on this game and we are super motivated to keep working it. So big thanks to everyone from the team and I :)
And Happy New Year everyone <3

Cheers,
Mariina

First of all great game, i absolutely love it. AD i feel has been the best expansion thus far. But 100% agree with everyone here that a huge opportunity was missed when EVERYONE has been asking for Seasons and instead you took the easy way out and gave of snow.........ALL the time.....its beautiful to look at. But to be in the city all the time is too much. I think you would have saved a lot of aggravation if you had just taken the time to do it instead. Just my opinion. It seems like whatever is asked for, we get it in some water downed version. Disasters to me personally is useless. I am not spending hours making a beautiful city just for it to be destroyed. Thanks for all your hard work and continued support!!

Hi Mariina,

Welcome back from holiday!

Making an area an attraction
First of all, to Anttonilla; thank you so much for explaining in clear terms (and with a picture!) what many of us seem to crave for the game. Whether it is for green spaces we create in the city or for seashore, a tool such as what you propose would fulfil our need. So many times I have spent time creating green spaces with pedestrian path in it and I had to simulate in my head that it was an attraction since the game itself doesn’t recognise it as an attractive place nor as increasing land value surrounding it. I have also seen many videos of people creating national park next to their city, I’m sure they would love to make them actually relevant in-game.

Zoning
From what I read here (and my personal opinion), I feel like most of us wish to create a city with more specific suburbs, so that each part of a city has its own atmosphere. That maybe explains why so many report the tourism districts as one of their favourite added feature since it allows to create leisure suburbs with high-rise hotel while other parts of the city has regular shops. For me, additional zoning would be ideal (more types of industries, governmental buildings zones, science research zones, culture zoning which would include museums and art galleries, etc)!

Events
I believe, having events (like stadium) also comes down to this. You could have one part of the city that becomes alive once in a while with its consequences (traffic, criminality,…). It would be great to also be able to select an area in the city that once in a while has kind of a festival or something (some road are closed off, many people walk in the street, maybe some actual visual effects to make it look different).

Decisions and consequences
To reply to Badi_Dea, I have posted a suggestion to give more dynamic to the game could respond to exactly the point you raise. The post is here:
https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...popularity-index-and-its-consequences.954391/
There would therefore be not a single way to successfully manage your city but instead, any decision has its pros and cons, forcing us to constantly slightly readjust until we find a good balance. Until the city grows again and forces us to adjust again.

To summarise, I would personally like to see more ways to give different parts of the city their own feeling. So that instead of simply laying down road and zoning, we could actually specialise more each suburb as time progresses.

Anyway, thanks a lot to the Colossal crew for that fantastic game so many people are passionate about!

After Dark. I like all the stuff it added.

Snowfall, I like, but staring at snow all the time starts to get old. Seasons would be better.

Have not gotten ND yet (gaming computer broke, so no point), so I'm not really sure about that. I do a lot of sandbox high detail stuff, so I don't really want to ruin it. Choppers sound fun though.

Love the game.

Would like ferries, different sized buses (I have nice workshop buses), more control over how many buses/etc on routes. Unbunching.
The parks thing. Like a few others who have posted, I hand make a lot of my own parks. Looks nice, but the game doesn't recognize that. Maybe if we could zone it? Farms too.
Be able to control arrows on roads.

Natural Disasters adds fun if you want to destroy your city and Snowfall adds fun if you choose some specific maps, while After Night adds fun for each of our cities.

That's why my vote goes for After Night. It was not made to build specific cities, but to improve all of them.

I also think most people are more interrested in having new tools, more diversity in their cities, and seeing what already exists being improved and deepened, rather than seing a new themed expansion.

I would rate the free canals, terraforming, etc. patch higher than any real DLC because it had more content (that I personally find appealing) compared to those DLCs. European buildings, designating building styles by district and day & night cycle were really approved additions too.

As for the DLCs themselves, I have to echo the general sentiment here and say After Dark is the most interesting one. Although I use commercial specialisation only rarely, it still provides quite a lot other stuff and thus pretty good value for money.

I'm not really keen to have a land of eternal winter, so Snowfall means mostly trams for me. Bought it nonetheless during some sale, since trams + support for those nice free patches was worth the (reduced) price for me.

Destroying my own cities isn't really my cup of tea, but I suppose it is nice to able to watch some Youtube videos of other people's cities burning. =P

After Dark was my favourite, simply because it bringed so many new mechanics, way more than Snowfall and Natural Disasters. Please give us more DLCs with new improvements about road communication, and managing city as a whole (eg more a complex budget)
But what i most desire, is a multiplayer. I know you wanted that game to be a singleplayer, but isn't now time for revisiting the idea of simple co-op? I imagine, that me and my friend can build our own cities on the same map, or build just one city, that we can together improve. Is that really so impossible to develop? It doesn't have to interfere with players who will still want a singleplayer game, so there are no cons for them of such mechanics. Probably, the only one problem is that it would require a lot of development work...

I'm happy to see people brainstorming here. Now someone at Colossal has to read this whole thing through and write everything down.

Things I'm eager to see expanded upon or implemented as a part of the base game:
  • Roads: more road types, remove pillars option, feature allowing micro management of intersections (remove/add traffic lights for example);
  • User Friendliness: freedom of movement, make everything easier to place, adjust and move (rotate, bend);
  • Assets: More tree and prop types
  • Better menu organisation, crisp new UI would be like christmas (I'd definitely pay for that)

I'm aware there are mods for probably all of these but they can break save games and aren't sure to stick around in the long term.
Yes, yes, yes, yes  Agreed.

Events could possibly be done as a free addition. The buildings are already there (many of the unique buildings would be suitable for events), and the event "logic" is already in the game because it would be similar to the soccer matches. So the game basically already has events, but they're limited to soccer games at the moment.
If they were to implement the events just like they work with the stadium ATM, then yeah, they could as well be free. But... if they decided to make it super deep, impactful and way cooler than what it is now, then I could pay for it.

I have been a fan of yours since 2013 when I discovered the Cities in Motion series, so I'd love to see more transportation options too.
Nice to see another CiMmer here :p. I bought the first CiM in 2011 but oh boy, Colossal Order became my favourite studio when they announced this marvellous game. Also RIP Maxis, my former favourite studio...

All the DLCs were kinda boring. The juiciy stuff came from modders and free updates. But AD is far superior to rest of DLCs for sure.
At this point, i think you should drop the support of the game. There is so many changes needed to AI, road system, zoning system, services, UI, balancing and performance... that it would make better sense to start over.
Free patches have indeed been very good and modding has basically saved this game and CO from a tsunami of requests. :D
I however disagree on your last sentence. This game has it's flaws but it doesn't mean that it cannot be improved. By that I don't mean that I'm not looking forward to the announcement of Cities: Skylines 2, but dropping support would be pretty rough move at this point.

Anttonilla made an excellent post. I agree with everything he said. More customization should be the focus of future expansions.
Well thanks :) I also agree with your points.

Won't waste your time with a long reply....

1) Improved Traffic AI / Road options is ALWAYS a good thing.

2) Don't you have a lot of USA customers? At least a couple of USA-based map themes (with appropriate buildings, road signs, etc.) would be really nice. :)

Update: Wow! The anti-American reaction surprised (and disappointed) me... :(
I don't think that it's the American part. An overly done American map theme could fit the game nicely when taking into account that we already have a traditional European theme. I'm not just sure if it's worth using all the development resources to that.

PS. I almost disagreed because I accidentally read your first sentence like "Don't waste your time with a long reply" :D

All the free stuff has been amazing, don't forget the tourism fix and the Match Day DLC.

Just an FYI, you might be thinking the disasters are more like the simcity variety but I found that having thunderstorms, lightning, bushfires added a load of realism as they are very common occurrences (maybe not fires for you haha #straya)
that still might not appeal to you but it appealed more to me than the meteors :) (the tornadoes are tragically beautiful to watch tbh)
I think my issue right now is how much of the added content is basically events countered by buildings. Snow ? Add more heating and snowplow. Disasters ? Shelters and alarm. I'd like the city to be more alive, and that mean something else than just plopping a building. For example politics (election, factions....), or "global" events (riots due to poor country politic, ethnic issues, war pushing for an increase in factory or an increase of refugees). That's just random example from the top of my head without thinking much about it, and not truly something to add, but I hope you get the idea. Rush hour mod have the events, which is good, and the stadium is part of it to, but it could be expanded so much more. Or also tourism, like a proper one. With season and stuff.
Basically, something the Tropico series have done better, ironically.

Something more than just "hey I need a building here because...". So far, our cities are large utopia where almost everyone is happy, besides a few complain, and we either face cataclysm of large scale, or fight the traffic. That's not even close to how cities are in real life. Except for the traffic part.

Natural disasters were never my taste. Yes, some of them are realistic, and might interest me, but they are not worth the price :)

1 = Natural disasters, i was not for disasters in this game but the way you made the whole brings a lot to the game!
2 = After dark , ideas there... leasure tourism, and ..all.... is great new content stuff for cities.. only shame for stuff that didnt work well with... a bit of lack of these commercial buildings too... more would be welcome to be honest.
3 = Snowfall, I don't think that one is needed for all gamers... it depends more from the gamers and their tastes, than the game itself. However,
actually i play on snowfall map, and i have to say, snowfall disasters together make things harder, its great! :D lol

I would like expansion on transport , for example for the content :
- driving vehicles in our cities (again! lol)
- various vehicles unavailable yet (monorail etc)
- different stations
- toll road with fee we would set and receive money in our economy panel for our cities^^ - truly missing in this game
- first person or better zoom
- some missions like with simcity 4 rush hour, but Keep these missions Reel please.. Missions we'll do when we'll want and the game doesn't have to decide when to launch mission for us. and allow driving without missions too. : )
- walk/controll a cim in our city
- not my case but for the people not interested by snowfall : add one more tramway for them
- if possible: rapid transit to rework with design and all like trains we can see, for we make it avaialble underground like above cims^^
- new buildings related with the expansion
- new roads (4 lanes is truly missing for example)
- we can imagine something like Transit Elevated Bus to unlock :
:)

and fixe that merch train that need a second locomotive please. Currently, it looks ridiculous to look at that train running from wagons...

I know that it might sound very harsh, because you and other people love the game. I do too, it is not bad game, but it has flaws. Now, the reason why dropping support of C:S and moving on to C:S2 makes sense is - the amount of change required to fullfil the ideas people are throwing around this topic (and reddit) is so big, that it wouldn't make sense from a financial standpoint to continue developement of the game.

This might get a lot of hate, but... CO doesn't really have a great track record of supporting this game. Sure, it is a small studio, but that doesn't mean the support is very good. Yes, we got weekly summaries which are very good approach, but since launch, the game did not really change drasticlly because of CO's support, but because of modders. And yes, the free stuff like stadium, quays and terraforming are good, but it was all just a reaction to mods that were already there. After Dark launched at the end of September 2015 and we waited more than 5 months to get tourism fix. More than 5 months! Oh, and remmember how day and night cycle was supposed to affect citizens? It has been more than 15 months and to this day it was not adressed at all.

Snowfall is the most laziest piece of software that I have ever witnessed. Trams are rehashed buses. Heating is a rehashed water. Plowing and road repair are... you guessed it right... rehashed garbage. And I could go on and on. No rendered interiors of tunnels, no overground metro, no merging lanes on roads. The highest level of management is moving a slider. You solve health, death, police and fire problems with plop a building and forget. Why we have 3 lane highway if 2 lanes are never used? Why service vehicles can't overtake anyone?

The stuff that I am the most frustrated is, that all the DLCs are far from finished and polished. There is several issues that has not been adressed, or it took ages to be adressed. The fact that devs publicly announced they don't want to touch AI is enough for me, not to support them. At this point, I don't want more DLCs. I want them to properly finish at least 1 DLC they made. Seems like AD is the most popular one, so why not take that sweet developement time and finish what was started 15 months ago?

My favorite DLC is "Natural Disasters". Twister, tsunamis, electric storms, meteorites or forest fires are spectacular. From time to time they take you out of the routine.
As already mentioned, "Snowfall" has only one problem: its permanent mantle of snow. With some "spots" of green here and there would be different. http://imgur.com/C9oJBN0
Scenarios and editor: are well, but I have not watched much.

Some things I would like to see:
-emergency vehicles (response cars, fire trucks, ambulances) must have priority in traffic.
-a 4-lane road in a single direction.
-Speed options for day / night cycle (1/2, 1/4).
-Night: "brightness slider" to see better map for play and build.

Last edited:
yes, if those after dark roads could work fine for emergency, would be great indeed....

And I find a bit crazy we have to use BloodyP mod No Radioactive Desert And More! to remove these colors that kills the nice map and city looking (and our eyes)..
That contrast because the sun is also silly... if you can update rhis in a good way, would be great really. (same goes for anti aliasing).

I want to congratulate you again for yr nice work and ideas for this game and expansion. Truly appreciated. Keep it up, CO!

I see where you are coming from. There are many things that really cannot be improved without making a completely new game. But dropping support for this game while we have no alternatives would be a step backwards. People still want this game to get better, since CSL2 hasn't been announced yet. As far as I know Colossal Order has two dev teams and they are already working on a new game. The thing is that we don't know if the next title will be Skylines 2 or something else.

This might get a lot of hate, but... CO doesn't really have a great track record of supporting this game. Sure, it is a small studio, but that doesn't mean the support is very good. I understand you because I fully agree! The expansions have been half baked and bug fixes have come so slowly that it hurts. I mean this forum already almost rioted when Snowfall was coming out. The features seemed boring, the game was full of bugs from After Dark and nobody seemed to care. The passion this fanbase has towards this genre makes us want the perfect city building game, and all Colossal Order seems to care about is to release their visions of the expansions in schedule. They leave things like UI design untouched and QA is almost nonexistent. This is a little example, but with Natural Disasters they promised to have roads that look destroyed. Still somehow in the finished version they are completely normal looking, except they lack street lights.

CO, please take notes.

+1 for After Dark

My suggestions for improvements that were not mentioned (or i did not notice them) from simplest to more complicated:

UI:
Make districts more informative, you can never have too much info ;) :
- Educational level of people living in this district
- How much taxes does this district contribute to your budget
- Where do people living in this district work / where people working in this district live (maybe in connetion with this district mechanic, example: 50% live in district A, 30% in B, 20% in C) this will help you decide where you need to place your public transport without mods such as Traffic Report Tool
- If you have citywide policies please do not show them in each district, makes it hard to see at a glance what policies are active specifically in this district

Traffic:
2 basic features of Traffic Menager: President Edition which would greatly help improve traffic whitout needing AI improvemnts or increase in calculations:
- Being able to manually choose and change lane arrows on intersections; especially with 3 lane roads it is a necessity as it removes the problem of 80% of vehicles using just the left lane to both turn and go straight while the middle lane is empty
- 4 lane roads, implementing them the same way as in the mod, very expensive, with no additions such as trees/grass or bus/bike lanes, making their only purpose being sustaing very heavy traffic

Fixes:
- Improving bus stops, making it possible so that 2 buses can load/unload simultaneously, maybe making a third one stand behind them and not blocking the nearby lane. It is increadibly irritating to have huge bus stops which are used in just a small fraction, with second buses bloking lanes while seeing wasted space near them. This is especially a problem if you have 2 or more bus lines on the same stop, and can even become problematic with a single one if you raise buses budget, resulting in impractical solutions such as having a number of bus stops right next to each other instead of combining them into one.
- Emergency vehicles being able to use bus lanes, and generally ignoring traffic
- Fixing traines, just looking at how they behave, with riding backwards, through each other etc hurts. That is without mentioning that they are just worse in every aspect when it comes to civilian transport to every other public transport.
- Tourism in general
- The policy "schools out" doesnt seem to have an effect, while creating a city I had a district with it implemented and only an elemtary school, soon i found out that half the population of this district had graduated university and were working in offices 3 areas from them instead of a farming and forestry districts that where right next to them...

Balance (this is more subjective and personal):
- Possibly making specialised industry 2 levels instead of one, especially the farming and forestry. They are ok at beginning of the game, but later on they just become placeholders for workers until a better job doesnt show up, then they are immediately abbandoned and rebuild only when all other jobs have been taken. It becomes irritating when 1/4 of your city becomes abandoned with the creation of a new buissnes centre or a small normal industial area.
- Maybe taxes should have a bigger impact on the city, as of right now i do not see a reason not to have them all set at 13%

I apologise if this sounded aggressive or whiny, I love the game and want it to improve to become the perfect game, therefore some constructive criticism was necessary.

Since everyone seems to be posting their wishlists in this thread I might as well join in :)!

Here are my list of what I wish to see from the upcoming year (i will probably add to this as i think of things):

Transportation

- Emergency Vehicle Right of Way (i'm really surprised this didn't happen with the Natural Disasters DLC, seemed like a prime opportunity to do it)

· Ferry System- Open Water

· Functioning Canal System- Boats/Barges, Yacht Clubs, Canal side Commercial Developments

· Water Taxi System

- Police Boats, Fire Boats

· Light Railway/Monorail- Similar to the Docklands Light Rail in London

· Cable Car

· High Speed Rail

- Rail Depots (Passenger and Freight Train)

· Functioning Car Parks

· Private Taxi Companies- An Uber equivalent (Provides a source of employment but clogs up roads)

· Greater Variety of Airports
- including Heliports, Private Airfields, Flying Schools

· Make the Skies more active- Include Civilian Helicopters (TV Helicopters, Private Helicopters of the Wealthy Citizens), more civilian aircraft (Cargo Planes, Small light Privately owned aircraft, Learjets etc)

· More Bridges (include world famous ones)

More Functioning Public Sports facilities and Sports Stadiums

- Football Pitches, Golf Courses, Baseball Parks, Local Cricket Pitches, Rugby Pitches, Athletic Clubs- Have them create a health benefit to the surrounding population

- More Real World Football Stadiums (Club and International Stadiums), Baseball Stadiums, American Football Stadiums, Cricket Stadiums, Rugby Stadiums, Athletic Stadiums, Horse Racing Courses, Golf Courses

- Please give us the ability to rename the sports teams at the stadiums and provide the match day mechanic for all the user made stadiums on steam workshop

Industrial Overhaul
- Zoning Overhaul (Raw Material Extraction, Dirty Industry, Manufacturing, High Tech etc.), New Policies, Water based industrial development (warehouses, Ship building, Oil Platforms) etc, Greater Variety of Buildings, Cargo Airport

· Air Pollution Mechanic (Crucial Missing Aspect of the Game- every other type of pollution exists but this)- Car Pollution, Factory Pollution, Increase in Health Problems

- Environmental Focused Policies

Farming Overhaul
- Separate Zoning Category

- More Important Role in the game (It's food after all!),

- Large Plot Sizes for realistic Farm sizes,

- Introduction of Different Farming Categories (Arable, Dairy, Fish, Poultry, Vineyards)

An Overhaul of the Societal aspect of the game
- Introduction of a population class system: Low Wealth, Middle Class, High Wealth Citizens- No more citizens with sports cars working as Shop Assistants (one of the silly aspects of the game)

- Education Overhaul (Too many highly educated people emerge in the game unless Mods are used)- Introduce different types of schooling including Private Schools

- Occupation of Residential developments need to be based on income

- Cities in general need to be rougher and a lot less clean appearance wise than they are at the moment- we don't all live in Switzerland :p !

Tourism and Culture Overhaul

- More Real World Landmarks, Museums, National Parks, Concerts, Multi-Use Stadiums, Functioning Television, Radio and Film Studios, Theatres, more growable hotels and restaurants

· Functional Beaches and a Proper Beachfront- I want to see Citizens actually swimming, subathing etc
-Proper growable Riverside/coastal developments (not ploppable)- residential, commercial, industrial, coastal parks

-Tour Bus (with Routes)

-Ability to build our own beach resorts, Golf Resorts, Ski Resorts etc.

· Zonebale Parks

· Functioning Religious Buildings (Churches, Cathedrals, Synagogues, Mosques, Temples etc)

- More Tourist Specific Policies

Connections
- Outbound Transportation Connections (Land, Air and Water Based), Exporting and Importing of Resources (Power, Water, Garbage) etc.
- Communications Network- Internet (Broadband), Mobile, Telephone

- A functioning Postal Service

- A functioning Online Retail
sector with warehouses and delivery couriers

· Visible ageing of infrastructure/Buildings from use
- Expansion of the maintenance mechanic- greater variety of maintenance services- Rail Maintenance, Road Maintenance, Building Maintenance, Utility Maintenance (Power, Water, Sewage)

Brin g the City to Life More:
-More visible and a greater variety of Crime- Vehicle Theft, Car Chases, Speeding, Assault, Murder, Drug Related Offences, Graffiti, Gun Related Crime, Gang Activity, Arson, Burglary, Street Racing etc. (it might make the game more gritty, but cities can be pretty grim places if you stand back and think about them and what goes on in them)

-District/ City Wide Celebrations and Events (New Year, Christmas etc.)

-Functional Unique Buildings

-Film Festivals, Concerts , Parades, More Sporting Events (including local derbies and the logistics of managing those)

-Vehicle Accidents, Pedestrian Accidents

-Infrastructure Failures (Burst Water Mains, Power Plant Explosions, Train Derailments, Power Failures)- Include animations as well

-Riots and Protests, Terror Threats and other security threats

-Strikes- Proper ones where services (the metro for example) are disrupted/closed down entirely for the day etc- Could be related to the amount of funding designated to a particular service

Other Gameplay Features:

· More Architectural Building Styles incorporated into the game (American and Asian Styles especially)- you could have it broken down into country specific styles e.g. European- Spanish, British, German, French etc.

· More Growable buildings of all types

-More District specialisations

· Fire Engine AI- if multiple buildings are burning they should not put one out and go back to the station

· Please sort out traffic AI with regards to the use of lanes on a road- every single vehicle should not be crammed into the same lane on a four lane highway- multi lane roads become pointless if this isn't sorted

· Please incorporate and expand upon some of the gameplay enhancing mods like you have previously- Rush Hour Mod, Metro Overhaul Mod, Ploppable RICO, Traffic Manager: Presidential Edition, Traffic Report, Building Themes, Realistic Population and Consumption, No Pillars, Citizen Lifecycle Re balance, Terraform Tool and many more

· Please increase the Limits imposed on the game- Population, Vehicle Spawn etc. This is a really restricting feature of the game- Make it an adjustable feature so players can adjust it based on the Computer system they have

Still transport, I imagine fine leasure park stuff like Hang gliding & stuff. :)
Zonebale Parks, oh indeed, wished for so long now ...+ props avaialble in-game.

including Heliports, Private Airfields, Flying Schools - no interest..

Vehicle Accidents, Pedestrian Accidents, riots etc...Those could be part of our missions as driver I said above (as emergency etc). - would need also different responses stuff as Mayor sure

I would say Natural Disasters are my favorite. With a very close second After Dark. But that's excitement vs usefulness.

-What I cannot imagine my game without is Rush Hour (mod). It's great and it is essential. People should go home when the sun is setting. Rush hours are great. Implement this mod and include events at more buildings (like the mod does).

-Run-down neighborhoods would be great, this ties in with services not being available there, and low land value. ATM it seems services go everywhere which upgrades neighborhoods even though you might not want to. I've talked about more dynamic neighborhoods before, SC4 changed the residential areas really nice.

-A few more road options won't hurt, like larger highways with good merging.

-Improving shorelines. I like the idea of the quays, but perhaps pedestrians must be able to walk on them like a path, and have a certain types of building that grow next to them if zoned, like restaurants, coffee shops, surf shops, and like some of the tourist zone specialization we have now.

-Which brings me to filling empty spaces, perhaps some sort of concrete filler, grass is not appropriate in built-up areas.

-Since everyone liked After Dark, I think another zone specialization could be cool, what I think is a warehouse area, this would be sort of a go-between with the industry (there is a lot of industrial traffic) I think trucks should deliver to the warehouse district, and the small delivery vehicles should deliver to commercial. The benefit could be that warehouses are not that polluting and can be near houses and offices and they do not look dirty. Then you can have them near everything, and the dirty industrial more removed. Or perhaps the clever people can think of better specializations.

I'm not sure if it's an anti-American bias. About all the city building games are US based cities. For non US people it tends to feel slightly "exotic", as for example European cities doesn't look like that, and I'm sure Asian cities are different, for the majority of them anyway.
I, for one, I'm glad to have something different. Not only because it's closer to what I see everyday, but also because that's more variety in a genre who didn't have any so far. Not to mention, CO being European, it is quite expected, mostly because they take real life experience in design. Also, stuff like sauna and city wide heating is kinda fun, even though I never heard of city wide heating until CS came, and I don't think I ever saw a sauna in my life. As I said, variety.

On the bright side, you have tons of perfectly good mods about US themed stuff (roads, signs, buildings...).

I would rate the free canals, terraforming, etc. patch higher than any real DLC because it had more content (that I personally find appealing) compared to those DLCs.
Come to think of it, that was probably the best "dlc".

Reactions:
I liked the Snowfall DLC the most, mainly because of the trams. Snow maps are nice too, but I usually stick to European maps. I don't use the scenario editor at all, I prefer a sandbox game.

My suggestions for the game:

- Please add new district styles in a DLC, so players can make their cities more diverse or create a certain theme. I'm thinking about a New York / Brooklyn style, American Ecclectic/suburb style, slums/ghetto style, Meditteranean style, Asian style, Russian/Eastern European style, Middle Eastern style, medieval European style (for historic city centers!) and a flats/apartments style like the banlieus in Paris and the Bijlmermeer in Amsterdam. I know some of these styles can be downloaded in the workshop, but it would be nice if certain styles would be optimized and supported by the developers, so the won't break down after each update. More district styles besides vanilla or European is my number 1 wish for this game.

- Traffic needs to become more managable. Every single city I build is plagued by traffic jams. I've tried all the advice people gave online, but nothing seems to prevent it from happening. In the late game most of my cities end up completely bogged down with traffic, which ends all the fun I'm having.

- Add new buildings such as historic city walls, skyscrapers, religious buildings (churches, mosques, synagogues, etc.), different bridge styles and billboards to create something like Times Square. Again; I know some of these are available in the workshop, but these aren't supported and are often broken after an update.

- Ferry lines.

- Desert maps, so we can build Las Vegas and Middle Eastern cities.

- Terraforming/landscape design: please remove the "not enough soil" problem and add a tree brush.

- Politics: it would be fun to add a city council and periodic elections. The mayor/representatives/parties all have their own agenda that the player can try to accomplish for bonuses (like extra money), such as "free public transportation", "more industry", "build an airport", "add more playgrounds", etcetera.

- Better optimization: the game can be very laggy and makes my PC roar like a jet engine, so please make it run a little smoother.
