So, started a new campaign as France. Wanted to try the whole client state thing and get the Napoleonic feel.

Decided that Provence has had Maine and Anjou for long enough. I declare war and see their only allies are Hungary and Milan. Both nations myself and my vassals can deal with. I declared them non co-belligerents in the war so that they can't call their own allies in. Or so I thought...

Months into the war, I notice that Orleans just got stomped by a Burgundian army. Then notice that, not only has Burgundy entered the war, so has Friesland, Savoy, Sienna, and Utrecht. None of these new combatants are allied to Provence. They're ALL allied to either Hungary or Milan, the original allies and non targets.

Did selecting them before declaring war allow them to call allies or is the system a tad screwy right now? What gives?

Allied nations default to not being co-belligerents, and selecting them in the declare war screen sets them as co-belligerents. So yes, selecting them before the war did allow them to call their allies. Granted, the system might be a tad screwy right now regardless, but in this case I don't think that was the problem. The interface just wasn't clear enough on how the system works.
