But do CN's still are ineffective?

From some update CN's havent even power to winning a defensive war against the non-reformed natives; often close to bankruptcy and without economical intervention of players in eg. infrastructure CNs were always poor and sometimes even unprofitable.
You should always give each colonial nation a 2 monthly ducat subsidy. Colonial nations seem to recruit armies better now, and will send troops to help you conquer any native tag they border, but i haven't seen them start a war themselves this patch, which they used to do awhile ago.

I also dont know if they fixed the Catholic colonial nation bug where protestant colonial nations would conquer far faster due to lack of treaty of tordeisslas...

Ah that, sorry "colonial empires" made me think of an actual mechanic.
Yeah it makes game more interesting, you can make a colony self governing in a barren colonial region like la plata, have the carribean as a private enterprise as well as any gold producing region, and then big ones like mexico and 13 colonies as crown colonies.

It might just be more feature bloat, and at leviathans launch, the colonial nations would default to monarchies for some reason, but this bug has since been fixed thankfully

Bankruptcy i havent played enough games to know if they fixed it, but great power ai goes into debt less often now, so this should trickle down to colonial nations
