Does anyone have any knowledge about the effects of closing a strait? For example, will closing both the Suez and Gibraltar as Italy prevent GB from entering or leaving the med, and trap the fleets inside of the med?

Hi everyone! At this point we have covered almost all big features of Hearts of Iron IV, so today I thought I would highlight some of the smaller changes we have done and give a little update on where we are in the project. Right now our Release Candidate has been approved which means that no matter what we have something of good quality to release, and the release date 6th of June is safely locked in! At the moment we are working on further balancing and bug fixing for a release day patch.
Straits and Canals
The straits system in HOI4 is our most flexible and moddable yet. Each strait can have different rules to better match historical rules rather than trying to fit it all under a general blanket. Each strait has a list of provinces that needs to be controlled to decide the rules and they can have 4 states in relation to you:
Friendly - you and allies control all provinces.
Contested - Control of provinces is mixed between you and someone you are at war with generally blocking you both.
Enemy - Controlled by enemy, generally blocking you completely although some may let submarines through.
Neutral - You are neither friend or foe. Usually means you can go through unless it's something like the Panama Canal, or the Turkish Straits where only trade is allowed.
For each of these a strait can specify what happens with military transports, fleets, trade and submarines.

To your example: yes, closing both entrances to the Mediterranean would block out the Brits, and indeed that'll probably be a popular Italian strategy. For example
I'm... really not certain, and I hope we get a good answer.happens to the fleets trapped in there

I was more focused on what happens to the fleets trapped in there, if there are then are they stuck with out supply (if ships have supply) or do they just continue with their orders until they are sunk or are relived?
that is possible aswell of course, provided you got enough Close Air Support and Naval Bombers available of course.i was thinking more along the lines of close both straits then bomb the heck out of the fleets like fish in a giant barrel
You dont need much, they cant repair but you can.that is possible aswell of course, provided you got enough Close Air Support and Naval Bombers available of course.

Well why would they have a friendly port in the Med? I assume you can make france surrender quite quickly, her colonies go to will also so the Vitchy France. You would have control of the coast of Egypt if you control Suez and the Levant should be within your grasp. If they have a port, they can repair.
Unless the port needs to be linked to your homeland to be able to make repairs ?

Nobody is stopping you as Italian from swarming those ports with ground troop to cut it off except for British troops of course.
...So if after closing the Mediterranean you capture many provinces and/or their ports, they will end up with poor supply or completely out of supply.

Gibraltar (depending on how the strait was closed), Syria and Malta.Well IIRC UK still has Cyprus and Palestine, friendly Greece (if they have not already surrendered).
