Client States. Did you ever make one? What did you think?

So it's basically turning a bunch of your land into a vassal that you can feed but doesn't use up a diplo slot sort of making a revoke the privilege situation? Right? Or am I incorrect?

It's gotten pretty late in the game though I've honestly never messed around with them.

If you messed with them what did you think?

They seem to have pretty bad national ideas.

Well firstly, I rarely play long enough to reach DIP 22 (by that time I've gotten board of whatever situation I'm in), so I lowered the requirement down to DIP 5 so I could actually use Client States. Found out why they are restricted to Tech 22.

I must admit though, there is so much fun in making a nation, giving it a name and flag (from the limited options) and outlining its borders. I just went crazy as Ming and divided China between six Client States, bypassing the Inward Perfection modifier to overrun everything around me. That was fun.

You are limited to 10 client states, so keep that in mind.

Personally, I've only used them once and it was definitely for the pretty borders. I was doing a Teutonic Order>Prussia>Germany game and had kind-of inherited Hungary... by accident. Anyways, while Poland was a magnificent addition to my empire, Hungary was not, so I set up a nice buffer state to pretty out the borders.

My biggest gripe (probably my only one) is that the flag maker is pretty bad. It's probably the most minimalistic set of options I've seen on a customizable anything in over a decade.

I used them to by pass conversion issues, since I had taken neither religious or humanist in my game, when I conquered Greece and later Anatolia I made Client States so their accepted cultures would include Turkish and Greek allowing them to by pass the unaccepted culture issue that would have affected me and convert the lands

I thought it was so you could have a large feedable vassal at the front lines without using one if your important diplo relations slots.

I hear that the vassal income modifier is all bugged up and you don't get the tax bonuses from them properly but if it's fixed I may want to try the whole thing out in a Bosnia game. They get good vassal bonuses in their NI if you get can over the initial hard times.

the only use i see is reducing rebel spawns by making client states of an entire big culture group. Makr entire french culture group a client state. Or italy. Or germany Russian. Persian. And so on and so forth.

This can be handy when your empire is so big that no culture is accepted anymore.

No clue if this is what it is intended for.

So, you can't switch occupation to a client state huh?

Here is a potential I see that is based purely on my experience with vassals.

I find large vassals can often be better during wartime then a larger country because you don't get as much pre-province as a new nation and vassals are more reliable then allies and you can save admin points by letting a vassal core for me.

If I have 6 maximum relations and it's all strong vassals then if anyone attacks me I can rely on everyone from every diplomatic relation at all times. If I can to start using a new relation slot I would normally eat a vassal and march on their side. Having ten bonus vassal slots could fix that problem.

I just haven't tested that yet and it's so late game and I'd only have about a century and a half to to toy with them.

They do share the common diplo slot limitation.

That will need to be corrected in the wiki then. If thats how it goes I'd rather just vassalize someone then.

If they take up a diplo slot then at best you have a vassal that costs your land but converts things to your culture and religion for when you plan to eat them after feeding them.

Assuming you started with a capital of your culture as that is what determines their primary culture.

Going back to my earlier example, I actually created Mega-Slovakia. Don't remember if Slovaks are in vanilla, but they're definitely in MPM. They also get generic ideas; and, while client state ideas aren't great, they're better than that.

Do we know if this is a bug? Did they mention the no diplo-slot thing in a dev diary?

If it's a bug, it should be reported.

something tells me client states just got entirely useless then.

I just verified. They do take up one of those all important slots. the wiki is wrong.

That's stupid.

As you can see the one I quickly made in the corner of Spain takes up a diplo slot but the game does not naturally have a country named Cookie Monster Land so you can tell it is my client state.

Taking a cool mechanic and making it stupid.

The clients states are a dumb idea on their own, like if you reduce the diplo tech cost down to level 5. They take up a diplo slot, lack cores, and have a horrible flag. HOWEVER, client states are awesome if you have equal levels of tech across the board. Admin efficiency and the nationalism CB work together to allow you to take provinces at an INCREDIBLY fast rate. The client state feature allows you to dump those uncored provinces into vassal states for free (without the -1000 overextended modifier to sell provinces) and then keep on expanding for no monarch points. As Qing, I currently have fed Japan to one client state in two wars, and cut up India into two separate client states, as well as directly annexed some of it. All of this was done in approximately 30 years. You do, however, need to have a bunch of diplo slots available, because I don't think my clients will ever be annexed due to the high base tax.

You use them in homogenous areas in which potential vassals have lost their cores. That's why it doesn't need to come earlier than the diplo tech that grants it, because you're able to use those potential vassals up to that point.

It effectively lets you create a duplicate nation in which you conquer it's clone. Create a Sunni Turkish client, then destroy the Ottomans by granting all their provinces to your client.
