People in the future won't have the question 'Why are we here?' and 'How we should best live our lives?'

I was just kind of poking a bit of fun at religions in this world, you know, hinting that they are primitive superstitions unlikely to survive into the far future of spacefaring civilisations.

It's partly tongue-in-cheek and being a bit provocative.

And I was using the term cynic as it applies in CKII, where the trait signifies atheist or anti-religious sentiment, or a 'rationalist' world view.

Unfortunately it is a case of, as Linus Torvalds once said, "On the internet, nobody can hear you being subtle."

As has been stated, religion IS featured in the game. You can choose to play as a religious civilization with the associated gameplay effects if you wish, we just don't show individual religions. I believe this is how it worked in Alpha Centauri as well (an excellent game). :)

Not really. With the exception of SoaSE, almost all 4x are played near exclusively SP, and some don't even include MP. GalCiv II has been one of the most popular space 4x games recently, and it had no multiplayer. GalCiv 3 had a more MP approach, and as a result has turned out to be a far shallower version of GalCiv II. There are also other types of 4x games like the X series which is exclusively SP. Even the Total War games have a large SP base. Paradox games in particular are mostly played SP especially considering their large scale and long play times. The 4x genre has a HUGE singleplayer customer base. Pulling too much focus away from SP turns your focus away from the base of the genre. Not saying you can't do MP, just never, ever, let it detract from SP.

I know this is several days old at this point, but it is so completely wrong that I think it needs to be called out.

GalCiv2 most certainly had multiplayer. I was a (small) part of the modding community back in those days, and there was a lot of demand for "lite" mods. That is, mods that didn't change the check sum and thus would work in *multiplayer*.

And how, exactly, is GalCiv3 a more shallow experience? From where I'm sitting, after a couple dozen hours into it, it has MORE features. The only thing lacking is the Spies mechanic, which always kinda sucked anyway.

Besides, Stellaris is built on Clauswitz, which already supports multiplayer.

You need to check your facts, GalCiv 2 did not have multiplayer, it had a metaserver that tracked your ingame stats and would give you medals/achievements if you achieved certain scores/victories/etc in metaserver games. It was all against the AI though. Lite mods that only changed certain effects would still work with the meta-server, everything else would disqualify you from participating. It was essentially Ironman Lite.

I stand corrected there, it's been a long time since I played GalCiv2 and I remembered incorrectly.

I still don't see how GalCiv3 is a "more shallow experience" compared to 2. Nor do I see how multiplayer will negatively impact Stellaris, considering the base engine already has multiplayer support built in. Honestly, Stellaris is a better fit for multiplayer than any other PDS game so far (as others have noted; symmetrical starts and a large procedural map).

All that said, I don't play these games in mp, and probably won't play Stellaris in mp if I get it.

So I have a question that might not be answerable yet

Will there be supernatural parts? Like the old Love-ly Ones? The 40k warp demons? Mysterious comets? Or other things along those lines?
Maybe to the degree of "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." -AC Clarke ?

Wait, only 16 nations at a time on a map? So if there's already 16 that means no new factions/rebels can appear? I was always assuming we could have a huge number of nations in the game not unlike previous paradox games.

No. 16 major nations at the start of a game. Not counting minor factions etc. And as far as I know new ones can rise and fall allways.

It's not 16

They just happened to play with 16 during the demonstration, we regular play multiplayer with 32 players. We do however suggest a number of empires from the start, but that is constantly being tweaked and no limit for the amount of empires that could appear during a session.

No.. this is wrong, you can have more or less starting empires on the map (at game start), but this can of course change through rebellions, war etc
