Can someone give me a simple explination of what claiming a throne does? it gives you a casus belli but with a royal marriage anyway you still suffer a penalty for a DoW. does this have anything to do with someone coming into a personal union under you?

Claiming a throne means that you believe you should be ruler of the target country, eg the brother of King of England claims that his elder brother isn't his fathers son and that he should rule the throne instead.

You still get a stab hit for the DOW because your about to start killing your relatives, which is frowned in most societies.

The non claiming way is to have a royal marriage, and then wait till their monarch dies. Hopefully, there will instead of being a regency, it going to you and making a PU

If you can maintain the PU, there is a good chance that at some point you inherit the country

HTTT makes this easier by letting you see who has weak succession claims and who is next in the line in a dynasty, etc. But I haven't played so can't give full specifics

And omg, I never realized Claiming the throne would give me a PU

so all i gotta do is claim throne then wait for their monarch to die?

You can do, it's not 100% guaranteed you'll get a PU though. If the claimed nation has more prestige than you they might just have one of their nobles take the throne, or if someone else also claims their throne you might get into a succession war over them etc.

You can also DoW with the claimed throne CB and just force them into a PU.

im playing on IN 3.2 btw

Ignore all the answers about PUs and inheritances. In your case, Claim Throne merely gives you a temporary CB against the other country (and ruins your relations with everyone with whom you currently have RMs).

You can't get a personal union without claiming the throne.

Yesterday playing as Castille I saw that England would form a Personal Union with Aragon if the Aragonese king died. I could not allow that to happen, so I laid a claim on my own, and when the Aragonese king died, we had a Succession War. One of the peace terms was to form a Personal Union with aragon for 40 warscore.
