Hi,

I have been playing game and trying to colonize Africa, but even tooltip tells me that I can claim colony if I have one building of every type in state. But at least in 1.02 I haven't been able to. I remember in my first game as France in 1.01 I lost Dakar when wasn't watching, so it most likely was possible at least then.

Any information about this? Should it still work and there is just some undocumented extra requirement or has it been changed (or is there a bug) in 1.02?

It seems not to work, the easiest way is to play as russia in the GC. When you look at Alaska, you see, that you got every building once only two provinces without, but can't claim anything until you got all provinces.

All provinces have to be claimed. To take the Alaska example, Russia has at least one of every type of building. But those last two aren't yet claimed... as soon as somebody claims them whether its Russia or anyone else (and finishes building there), Russia can then claim Alaska.

It works, and to well imo. Coastal colonies need 1 of each of the 4 and inland ones just 3 as you can't build coaling stations there. As mentioned all provinces has to have a building tho.

It works to well due to examples like this one. I had laid claims on all of inland Algeria(16 provinces). All I needed to keep was 3 provinces(fort, mission and trading post), the rest I sold off to UK and Austria before I claimed the colony. From this I gained a couple techs + a lot of cash from UK and from Austria I got Lombardia and Venetia. I also got Bengal the same way with another colony.

So imo there needs to be some extra minimum requirement to claiming whole colonies like say 2/3 of the provinces to stop players from just selling off the extras right before claiming.

Also there is a problem with the US and it's claims in the west. Atm I just declare on Liberia to get quicker access to inland provinces and as a bonus I get to grab most of(if not all) the US western claims. Theese are sold of to anyone but UK or Mexico and as a result the US never gets(like 90%) it's western territories.

I'd like to see something like claims can only be traded for other claims or colonial land. Atm they're a goldmine, especially when all you need is a colonial war vs the nation with a lot of claims to restock.

I had a weird excounter with Spain in an inland colony of Africa. I had all the provinces claimed except for one owned by Spain ( with all three types, naturally) and it would not allow me to claim the colony. I had to negotiate with Spain for the last province to claim the colony.

Though I got back at the computer by negotiating one claim for Singapore and Hong Kong.

I guess you have to be an Evil God to do stuff like that ;) As the saying goes, "Juksemaker pipelort, tar igjen og gir det bort" (which roughly translates to "cheater, cheater, pumpkin eater, giving stuff away with one hand while taking it back with the other")

IMHO, claiming a colony where other countries have claims should seriously deteriorate relations, give BB and possibly trigger a colonial war. Not sure what happens now; has anyone looked into it?

There's a relations hit but it's not all that big.

You do not need every type of building to claim a colony. I have claimed colonies with just missions/churches. I have never built a fort and I've claimed numerous colonies in version 1.01 and 1.02.

True, my bad for not mentioning that. The fort is only needed if there are claims by other nations in the colony.

And rafiki, I don't really feel bad for UK or Austria :D Not like they can't afford donating some £ to poor old me(and it saves SP from getting owned in Italian question). If Italy unifies I'll hand my Italian provinces to them, I'm just keeping them "warm" :D And Bengal saves UK in India. Ain't I the nice protector?

The rule is: If you have a claim in all provinces of a colony, no diversity of buildings is required to claim the colony. If provinces of a colony are claimed by multiple countries, then you need to have all 4 building types in order to claim the colony.

The AI does seem to have some problems with all this tough. It seldom builds forts and is unable to claim colonies. Often building a tradepost in the state is all that is needed to keep AI from claiming.

And why oh why does it always offer £1500 for something that cost me £5000 to build?

Some african regions are weird, as they looklandlocked, but there's some lakeside property there and you can place coaling stations (or at least the provinces by the large african lakes were coastal in 1.01, didn't notice how that is in 1.02).

Another thing, who's noticing french missions on lake Chad? It is coloured "land" in the political mapmode, and troops can walk through it, and can be claimed. Is this a "feature" of the spanish release, or is it present everywhere?
