You need to claim throne when your dynasty is on the throne and they have no heir. Then you get a Claim Throne CB which you need to declare war with. I don't know why you are able to claim throne when it doesn't do anything. Just typical Paradox I guess.

If they die without an heir and you have claimed their throne, a member of your dynasty will take the throne, then allowing you to potentially claim the throne again and get an actual CB.

If you have the personal blessing of Johan you can even get a PU directly by claiming a throne and the target nation's monarch dying without an heir. But those who have embraced innovative ideas reject such whisperings as mere superstition.

Does it matter if they have an heir with a weak claim? What does it mean when it says "our claim to the throne of X has expired", is that just for the CB, do I still get my dynasty on if they die without an heir?

You can claim the throne when they have a weak heir, in which case nothing will happen unless the heir happens to die.

Claims expiring means the target nation has gained an heir. If the heir dies, you'll have to claim the throne again.

And suddenly it's more like Crusader Kings 2. Kill the family, take the Throne and guard against your sons plotting your end. :p

Ask Elizabeth I, Heinrich III, James I, Heinrich IV, Ludwig XV, Peter III, Gustav III, Paul I or Napoleon Bonaparte. They all were targets of assassinations in the time line of EU IV. And these are only the targets, were the assassinations were revealed. The house of the Habsburgs had a great talent for those things too.

Not saying I'm totally against it, but it really needs to come at a great cost. In CK2, it's plainly abused to an absurd extent. It would help in getting personal unions, but say at the risk of AE and a huge relation hit to everyone that isn't a rival to that nation if you get caught.

would actually be great to be able to have more control over dynasties (by killing off their kings/heirs), start by having them die in battle when they get stackwhiped (it's currently not risky enough to have rulers in battles)
yes it would help with the PUs, but why not? makes the game a little more dynamic
